There are rules, but he doesn’t follow a single one of them.

“Lick the bite, and your saliva will heal the wound,” I tell her, ignoring my business partner.

“You must spend a lot of time with vampires.” She tugs her hand away, lapping at the bite just before my healing kicks in to do it for her.

I frown, realizing my oldest friend in the human realm will be able to scent my current state.

He’s an ancient vampire, after all.

The heckling will be never ending.

I place the baby vamp on her feet as she wiggles her legs.

Novak appears at our side.

I tilt my head, allowing my eyes to flash back to their natural state. It’s unfortunate, because the decay will now set in.

I’ve got no more than thirty minutes before this form will wither and die.

“I see,” he says with humor lining his tone.

“I have to go.” She gives my chest a shove that wouldn’t have a hope of moving me. However, I’m posing as a human, so I instantly step back.

The darling little thing trips over her heels in an attempt to flee.

Grasping her thick hips, I give them a tender squeeze as I keep her from face-planting into the concrete.

How intriguing.

She truly should have better control of her faculties.

I’ve never seen a vampire without the utmost grace. She seems a bit like a newborn foal just learning their footing as she flails.

It’s…charming.

No, that can’t be right.

I appreciate understated grace.

“Okay, that was close,” she mutters, shoving her hair behind her ear.

Fine.

She is quite cute, even if she’s a disaster.

“I’ll see you around, little vampire,” I muse, releasing her.

“Uh, thanks,” she mutters. “Bye.” And with that, she zips away quicker than this set of human eyes I’m using can track.

“Who was that?” Novak asks in an intrigued tone that makes me consider removing his head from his shoulders.

“I didn’t get a name,” I tell him truthfully. “I’m more concerned that she was running around on empty. She’s afledgling. If I’m not mistaken, she stated she was turned less than a week ago.”

“No newly turned vampires have been reported to the town council,” he says, now sounding more interested than before.

“She’s not for you,” I growl, sounding unreasonable and mildly petulant.

Novak chuckles darkly. “You know how good I am at sharing.”
