“I will call you later,” I said to Kat.

She frowned momentarily before she nodded. We could both agree that our lawyers were batshit crazy.

“Good luck trying to find your car. I was late because I may have called the parking enforcement number to have your illegally parked car towed away,” she shouted to his back with a wide smile.

I heard Warner curse before he called my name.

“I’m sorry ladies,” I said before I took in Katya one last time before I followed her back to Eliza’s apartment.

By the time I got outside, Warner was calling the tow truck facility. He raised his finger at me while he finished his call.

“I’m sorry about that, Seth. That was completely unprofessional of me,” he said, shaking his head in dismay.

“What the hell, Warner? That is the love of my life in there. The mother of all my children. The woman I want to grow old with,” I said, waving my hands around with each point I made.

“If she is the opposing lawyer on the case, I can't help you with the divorce. I can put you in touch with a couple of guys I know,” he said.

“Who is she? How does she know you of your family?” I asked because he had never mentioned his personal life to us.

“I don't know, but I'm going to fuck my investigator up for not digging deeper,” he said.

After he gave me the contact numbers and another apology, he left to retrieve his car. I spotted Eliza’s car and went to my car to get my travel pen knife. Katya’s messages to her lawyer proved she missed me, and I wanted my allotted time with my wife today by hook or by crook.

Chapter 6

Katya

I watched my opportunity to talk to Seth Vanish as his suited ass headed toward the lifts. He looked good today. He had been to his barber’s recently because his beard and hair looked freshly trimmed. He wore my favourite aftershave. When he pushed my chair in for me, I leaned towards him to sniff it. I turned towards Lizzie, who looked disgruntled.

“What was that all about?” I asked

“He slept with my ex-stepmother. I call her number two. He probably doesn’t even remember. The rest is true, he is a whoring vulture, but I shouldn’t have brought it into your meeting. Sorry.”

I was still processing the first part of her statement, but it made me appreciate that my parents were a simple, straightforward couple. I used to think they were boring when I was younger, but sometimes, slow and steady wins the race, like learning to walk again after drinking so much.

“Stepmother number two? How many were there?”

“Four in total after my mother,” she said with a smirk. “Yet Daddy dear has a law firm specialising in divorce.”

“The irony. I could picture Warner being a fuckboy. Although he seems to have calmed down a little since he is getting on in years,” I mused. Although both lawyers had a vicious tongue, I would put my money on Lizzie.

“Fuckboy. I like that,” she said with a chuckle. “I’m stealing it.”

“It’s yours,” I said graciously as her smile waned.

“Look, I know you wanted to speak to Seth, and I wouldn’t usually advise this, but chat with him outside in neutral territory. He looked genuinely distraught by not being able to stay. You both did,” she said softly.

“Mmm,” I said, nodding before I looked at her. “It’s been five days, and I miss him. Seeing him today was—” I said, but I trailed off because my mind and heart were conflicted. “Did he sign the paperwork?”

I didn't want to tell Lizzie about his crazy antics at the nightclub or apartment in case she suggested applying for a restraining order. I knew he wasn't coping well enough to undertake such out-of-character stunts, but she might be okay with the gifts he sent.

“No, but we can apply for the divorce on a sole application basis. I get it, and honestly, a small part of me is sitting on the fence, rooting for you, Katya. It is early days, and I have a few cases that I can take if you want to go a little slower,” she said.

I mulled it over in my head before I nodded. The break with Eliza was precisely what I needed in my time of crisis. Since the evening at the nightclub, he messaged me every morning and night, even if it was only to say good morning or good night. When I left Lizzie, my mind was still on seeing Seth in the flesh. The conflicted feelings were worse than I could have imagined.

Over the last four days, Seth has not sent me any flowers or jewellery. Instead, he has sent me books, expensive bath salts, a relaxing sleeping kit, and a vibrator. I had no idea how he knew what books I liked or which vibrator I had my eye on, but this reminded me of what he whispered in my ear.

I see you now.
