“Don’t sign anything until I look it over,” I ordered Sweet Pea as he thumbed through the F.B.I.’s offer.

“I think I can handle reading, baby. My eyes aren’t broken.”

“No, but I have more experience with legal documents, and I want to make sure the F.B.I. doesn’t try to screw you via a loophole. Will you let me look it over first, please?”

Sweet Pea smiled, handing the agreement to me.

I kissed him gently. “Thanks. Maybe reading this will help keep my mind off what you’re about to do.”

“Taxi will have me covered,” Sweet Pea said, trying unsuccessfully to reassure me. “If Wolf agrees to the meeting, that is.”

“I hope he doesn’t.”

“Callie, what I’m about to do is gonna wipe the slate clean for the club.”

“But why does it have to be you?”

He raised an eyebrow. “I warned you, counselor. My life is crazy.”

“Crazy doesn’t scare me, but losing you does.”

“I promise I’ll be back. I’m not going to walk out on you.”

“You can’t walk.”

Sweet Pea smiled, “I’ll make sure they wheel me back to you in one piece.”

“I hate this plan,” I said.

“I love you,” Sweet Pea replied.

“Dropping the L bomb isn’t fighting fair,” I said, as my insides turned to goo.
