“Baby.” There was a pause. “I do believe you’re becoming more honest with your feelings toward me.”
My heart might burst. Such a simple conversation was making me feel like I was on top of the world. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“I fucking love that shit. I need to know how else I make you feel.”
“Silas,” I groaned.
His deep, throaty chuckle had my toes curling.
“What are you doing?”
“Almost finished getting myself and T.J. ready. We’re about to head your way.”
“Change of plans.”
My smile dropped. What? Why? A million depressing scenarios swirled around in my head. Did I do something wrong? Had his feelings changed? Had he realized I wasn’t worth the trouble?Stop being so negative.None of those sounded like Silas.
But I wanted to be with him, and the change of plans was disheartening.
“Okay,” I mumbled.
“Whatever you’re thinking, baby, unthink it.” His gruff voice penetrated the fog clouding my happiness.
“Then we’re coming over,” I said matter-of-factly.
There was a sharpheh, like a short laugh slipping out before he said, “I’m giving you an address. You’ll come here. The place is a bit of a mess—”
“Where are you?”
“Just come on. If you have trouble finding the right turn off, call me, and I’ll come out.”
Wait. Didn’t Sarah say something about him fixing up his grandmother’s home? “Are you at your mamaw’s house?”
“It’s mine now, but yeah,” he answered. “How did you know I was at my gram’s?”
My cheeks warmed. “It was a guess. Sarah mentioned her once, so I put two and two together.”
“Mm-hmm.”
I rolled my eyes. “You’re annoying.”
“Do you want me to come get you?”
My stomach got all fluttery. For someone so grumpy, he never treated me or my son like a problem. “Send me the address. I’ll find it.”
“We’ll see,” was all he said.
______
Damn it. I’m lost.
My heart hammered, and I startled as a giant dog jumped onto my car door. I wasn’t parked in anyone’s driveway, but close enough that the dog must not like it.
Oh sweet baby Jesus. I was worried someone would walk out with a gun if I stayed there any longer. I called Silas as the dog barked and clawed at my car.
“Where are you?” he asked after the second ring.
“I have no clue, but this dog is about to break down my door.”
