“Because he had an emergency at work. We’ve already been over this.”

“But that doesn’t mean we can’t go home.”

“This is my day off and I’m doing your dad a favor. I want to be here with my boyfriend. He gets lonely here without me.”

Kyle could see Finn look behind them, his expression doubtful. “But Mr. Drake could watch me or Ella.”

He heard a loud male voice coming from the direction Finn had just glanced, “Stop complaining. Here are your choices, shut up or go to bed.”

Finn’s lips quivered, Kyle was sure he didn’t know what to think, since he had never been talked to that way. Kyle wanted to roar at the top of his lungs! He knew he needed to duck into a room just in case they made Finn go to bed. As he started to creep backward Finn must have caught the movement because his eyes suddenly widened. Kyle shook his head franticly and placed his finger against his lips to silence him. Finn glanced toward that same corner and back at his dad, then sat down next to Lindsey. Kyle was drenched in nervous sweat. Thank God his kid was so damn smart. That could have had deadly consequences.

Kyle knew he had one shot at it. He had to risk it sooner or later, so he stealthily continued down the hall. When he reached the end, he charged full speed toward the adjoining room. Marcus had his back to Kyle, so he easily tackled him to the floor. Marcus recovered quickly and began fighting back. Kyle was on top of him pummeling his face, “You son of a bitch! No one fucks with my son; I’m going to kill you with my bare hands.”

Marcus managed to grab Kyle’s fist on the next swing bending his wrist back painfully. Since it was the same arm that had been injured in his accident, he was at a disadvantage. Marcus kicked at Kyle as they both struggled for the upper hand.

Dave and Chaz burst through the basement door and hurled themselves into the fray, quickly subduing Marcus and twisting his arms behind his back to cuff him.

Kyle stood and immediately sought out Finn. The front door was wide open, and he could see Lindsey running toward her vehicle pulling a resisting Finn along behind her. Suddenly Ella appeared out of nowhere and threw herself at Lindsey. Screaming like a banshee she wrapped her arm around Lindsey’s neck putting her in a choke hold.

“Run Finn, go get in that white SUV over there! Lock the door.” Finn ran as fast as he could then climbed into the vehicle an locked the door. Chaz ran out to help Ella while Dave phoned the police leaving Kyle to guard their prisoner until the police arrived.

Marcus had blood pouring out of his nose and his lip was split wide open. He still managed to sneer at Kyle as they stood facing one another. Kyle’s jaw was clenched, eyes blazing with fury.

As he stared into the eyes of his enemy, he suddenly had a sick realization about why this stranger had looked so familiar. It was like he was looking at a different version of himself. He was looking into the vacant eyes of a brother from a different mother. It all came together in an instant, the blackmail attempt on his father, when that hadn’t worked out, plan B, the kidnapping. The resemblance was uncanny. He couldn’t be mistaken.

“I see the light bulb going off Brother,” his lips twisted bitterly. Turning to Dave he said, “Which one of us is better looking?”

“Shut the fuck up,” Dave said. Marcus winced as Dave jerked his cuffed arms sharply.

“Why?” Kyle asked.

“Why…really you have to ask?”

“Yeah, I do.”

“Why don’t you ask dear old dad?” He smiled but his eyes remained void of emotion.

“I’m asking you.”

“Our dear father fucked his maid, my mother, when she was seventeen years old. She got pregnant with me, then instead of doing the right thing he fired her. Told her she was lying that it couldn’t be his baby.”

Kyle just stood there, arms hanging down by his sides.

“She begged him to let her keep her job. She was poor with no family, nowhere to turn. You have no idea what it was like growing up watching my mother struggle to raise me alone, poor, sacrificing herself for her only son. Barely getting by from paycheck to paycheck.”

“Why didn’t she sue him…make him take a paternity test?”

“David and Goliath—surely you’re not that insulated from reality. But then again you probably are. How do you think that would have ended? The domestic help takes on the billionaire…and all the power and connections that go with it.”

Marcus continued, “Mom never told me who my father was until she was on her death bed. She died from cancer when she was forty-five years old! Died because she didn’t have access to good health care, because she was still dirt poor.”

“Why didn’t you just reach out to me or my sister or brother?”

“Fuck you, do you know how enraged I was after holding my mom in my arms as she took her last breath? I swore revenge for her. I watched and waited. For seven years I bided my time.”

“You let it rob you of your soul,” Kyle said sadly.
