“Now, as I was saying…” Tiffany returns her focus to the group and begins talking about the upcoming mixers and fundraisers.
Savannah casts me a supportive look from across the room, and I give her a polite smile. Then I’m not listening again. Tiffany’s voice and everyone fades into the background.
This time, my daydreaming doesn’t just include Dmitri. I think of my father and how worried I still am about him, and I think of the past with all its problems.
Some of which were caused because I can’t remember what happened.
I used to watch these movies about people who had lost their memories. When it happened to me, it felt like it was happening to someone else.
The worst part is that very few people know about it. Though, I’m not sure what benefit it would be if the world knew. Maybe part of me thinks it would help, so I wouldn’t have to carry the burden on my own. It won’t.
Thinking about the past won’t help anyone.
Nothing I do will help anyone.
Not until I remember the things I can’t.
Chapter Thirteen
Mackenzie
After the meeting, Savannah, Sawyer, and I hang out with Eilish in the lounge.
They convinced me to stay out a little longer. I felt I could use the company after the run-in with Tiffany. And really, what am I going back to my apartment for? To be alone with my worries?
Not the best idea.
I’m sitting cross-legged next to Eilish on the oversized couch, while Savannah and Sawyer are in front of us on the fluffy white Persian rug.
The two of them are dressed in matching Van Halen T-shirts and ripped jeans, and their hair is in a messy bun style. Like this, they’re almost impossible to tell apart.
Sometimes, not even their parents know who’s who. They’re forever swapping places, which doesn’t help.
They’ve been doing this crazy thing since high school where they swap nonstop throughout the day. They’ve swapped on exams both practical and written, doctor’s appointments, and even dates, so they both dated the same guys. None of which knew they were twins.
I’ve felt it must be like wishing there were two of you when you wanted to get twice the amount of work done.
Savannah has been telling us about her trip to Europe over the summer and the adventure she had when she got stuck in an elevator with Killian Knight, the lead singer of the rock band The Whispers.
“You lucky bitch. Why are we just hearing this now?” Eilish winces, throwing a handful of popcorn at her. She’s a Whispers fan. Most of us are, but Eilish is obsessed. “We’ve been back at Raventhorn for nearly two weeks, and you didn’t think you should share this piece of news?”
“I didn’t want to boast,” Savannah replies with a coy girly giggle.
“Are you kidding me? That’s the sort of thing you shout from the rooftop.”
“That’s exactly what I said,” Sawyer jumps in.
“Where were you when this happened?” I ask.
“At the farmhouse in Russia watching cows give birth with my grandma.”
We all laugh. Sawyer and Savannah always have the most hilarious excuses and stories.
“How did you get stuck doing that?” Eilish asks, nibbling on some popcorn.
“We swapped places,” Sawyer replies, and she and Savannah chuckle. “I suppose it serves me right. I was supposed to be going to Italy with our Dad to meet our relatives. I love my family, but damn, they get on my nerves sometimes.”
“So, I went instead and ended up getting stuck with Killian Knight,” Savannah swoons.
