It’s almost seven by this point, and I grab a coat to pretend I’m going to have a chance at being warm tonight. The Kelly boys are lucky I have a soft spot for them.
Walking out, I grab a couple of protein balls from the kitchen before signing out and leaving by the side door. The cold air makes me shiver, as it’s almost mid February. I can only hope that spring decides to make an appearance soon.
The sky is clear as I walk, but I can’t see any stars due to being in the city. Stepping out of the alley, I look around.
“Adira!” Duncan calls out, his window open in his truck. He’s parked under a streetlight down the road a bit. Crossing the street, I walk toward him.
“You look like you’re going to freeze,” Callum says as he opens his door to help me in.
“I already am,” I grumble. “I’m not wearing enough clothes for this weather.”
Getting into the cab, I sigh thankfully as the warm air blasts out. The doors quickly close as I get comfortable behind them.
“Let’s do this,” Duncan says as I eat my snack. They’re growing on me, and they keep me full as well.
“So what exactly is this?” I ask, putting on my seat belt.
“It’s amateur fighting night atThe Underground,” Callum explains. “A pack came in from Chicago and started the illegalfighting ring. The fights are typically a good time. There’s a lot of money passed through there, but Duncan and I haven’t been in awhile. People are starting to talk, so we’re going to shut them up.”
“That doesn’t sound like very much fun,” I mutter.
“No, it is,” Duncan says with a chuckle. “There’s a political aspect to it, but that’s not why we’re dragging you along. I have a feeling you’ll enjoy the bloodthirsty aspect of it.”
“Duncan Kelly, I did not wear the right panties for this,” I sigh. “Blood and adrenaline may now be the only way I get ahh…”
“So precious,” Duncan says with a grin. “The only way you’ll pop a lady boner? Callum and I will politely ignore your squirming, Short Stuff.”
And perfuming.
“You guys suck,” I groan. “I’m broken, I may not have any reaction to men beating the shit out of each other.”
“You’re not broken,” Callum barks. “We’re sitting in the first fucking row to prove it. I hope you’re not wearing white under that coat. The blood will show.”
Fuck me.
CHAPTER 24
KANE
“Is this really a good idea?” Morris grumbles as he drives.
Tonight is an amateur fight night. They do them once a month, a chance for fighters to get noticed and moved onto a more regular fighting circuit. Our beta is grumpy, because this place is a mafia whore’s idea of a wet dream.
A lot of the mafia heads come here to bet on their favorite fighters, do business, or get their dicks wet with all the pretty omega pussy walking around.
Shrugging, I say, “What’s the fun in having those? I’ll get to beat the fuck out of someone, and then go home. I don’t see a downside to this.”
Jed snorts as he listens to my smug words. “Or you’ll get your ass kicked, and I’ll laugh,” he mutters. “I’m going to see if I can make connections tonight. I knew Minnesota would be slower to warm up to us, but this is ridiculous.”
“Patience,” Demon says. “We’re in short supply of it, but it’ll be necessary.”
“Wise words, little brother. How’s school going?” I ask.
“It’s been hell seeing her three times a week and staying away,” he admits. “I said my piece in the janitor’s closet, but it hurts to know that I make her so sad. I have a class with her tomorrow, and I’m going to plant my ass right next to her. I don’t know if I’ll say anything, but it’ll be nice to sit beside her.”
“I don’t think she has any idea how head over heels we are,” Morris says so softly I almost don’t hear him.
“We were screwed from the moment we chased her through her backyard,” I sigh. I’ve been keeping my suspicions to myself about Jeremiah, but I need to say something. “What if Adira’s dad didn’t steal from Dad?”
