Chapter
five
Mae had togo to the house and take a shower after they had run through a couple of scenes. She was a ball of anxious sweat and needed to wash it off. Plus, she was utterly exhausted.
She’d moved into Honor’s room since they were friends and she knew Honor wouldn’t care about Mae being in there. Not that any of the sisters cared since none of them actually lived there anymore. But she also knew that JJ’s crib was set up in Erin’s room and Brenna was still in the middle of moving things from her room to her and Finn’s new house, so Honor’s had been the best choice.
There was also a guest room downstairs, but Maureen and Johnny’s room was next to it and Mae didn’t want to infringe upon their privacy. Besides, having the entire upstairs to herself was almost like being back in her apartment.
Almost.
She felt a lot better after the shower, which had immensely cooled her overly heated body. Hopefully tomorrow would go better and she wouldn’t have to spend the next few weeks in a sweat-soaked fever of nervousness.
She hadn’t even had to directly interact with Kane in any of the scenes today. She’d met Sofie, the person who was going to play Amanda, her character’s sister, for one of the scenes. She was a delight and funny as hell to bounce dialogue off of. Not that Mae was any good at it, but she’d read the lines, which she supposed was all they had asked of her. And Alexis had seemed fine with what she’d done. She’d call it a success. A semi-success since this wasn’t her freaking job in the first place.
Tonight she had a date, which should help to relax her. She could blow all this off and go have some fun. She picked out a cute dress that felt nice on her body, slid into her sandals and headed downstairs.
“Someone has a date tonight.” Maureen gave her a quick smile.
“I need it after today.”
“Oh no. Did it not go well?”
“It went fine. It was just not what I’m used to, you know? I’ll fill you and everyone else in at tomorrow’s meeting.”
“Okay.” Maureen gave her a quick hug. “You go have a good time.”
“Thanks. I won’t be home late.”
“We don’t track your comings and goings, honey. You have a key and you can do whatever you want.”
That was a relief. “See you later, boss.”
She headed out the door, keys in hand. She walked toward the lot, which they’d moved near the movie production so they wouldn’t have to move cars all the time while they were filming. She saw a few people wandering around, then spotted Kane stepping out toward the parking lot. She kept her head down in the hope he wouldn’t see her.
He headed straight toward her, a big smile on his face.
“You look pretty,” he said, stopping by her car. “Big date?”
“Not big. Just a date.”
“Lucky guy.”
Just get in the car. Don’t make small talk.“What are you up to tonight?”
After she blurted that out, she wanted to kick herself.
“Nothing much. Where are you headed?”
“Having pizza.”
“My favorite food.”
Well, crap. “Why don’t you come with me?”
He let out a husky laugh. “On your date? I don’t think so.”
“We’re just friends. Trust me, I don’t really date.”
