She lets me hold her suspended above the ground, even when I break off our kiss.

It’s such a small thing, but just the fact that she trusts me enough not to drop her speaks volumes.

“We missed a few steps getting here,” I tell her.

She lets out a husky laugh, “I’ll say.”

God, she looks so fucking beautiful right now. Her arctic blue eyes studying me so intently, her mouth still gleaming from our kiss. Her cheeks rosy.

“Nyx…I know I said I did this to protect you, but that’s not the only reason.”

Her eyes widen a little, her pupils dilating as she searches my face. “What are you saying?”

“What I should have said the day I met you.” I lick my lips. Fuck, why is this so difficult?

“I—”

“Savage!”

“Fuck.” I close my eyes.

I stand, bringing Nyx with me. She lets out a soft laugh that dissolves when she spots Vito.

He’s wearing one of his serious expressions, and he’s running. Vitoneverruns.

“What is it?” I break away from Nyx, meeting him down the hall.

“They found Doc.”

My pulse roars through my veins. “Fuck.”

“Yeah…it’s not pretty.”

“Fuck!” I glance back at Nyx. I could bring her with me, but I don’t know what I’m walking into. And while I was happy to take her to one of our restaurants in a quiet part of town, I’m not about to drag her down to a crime scene where a rival cartel could be lying in wait.

News spreads fast…but it might not have spreadfarenough.

“Dinner!” I call out to her.

She cocks her head, crosses her arms over her chest. “Is that you asking me on a date, or telling me to have a roast ready when you get back from work?” she yells back.

My mouth presses into a smile, but she’s already rolling her eyes and turning her back on me.

Sam and Matias start in my direction, but I wave them away. Matias looks pissed, and then he spots Nyx stalking toward him and hurriedly gets out of her way.

“We have to hurry if we want to get there before the cops.”

I force Nyx out of my mind. I need to find out what happened to Doc, not obsess over…my wife. God, it feels strange eventhinkingabout Nyx like that.

I glance back and watch Sam and Matias trailing her down the hallway.

She’s safe now.

Mywifeis safe.

Isn’t she?
