“Lawrence?” Taylor spits her drink back into her glass in shock.

“Is there something wrong with that?” Isabel questions her, looking a little offended, she seems very sensitive lately and I’m starting to wonder if all those efforts she and Eli have been making to get pregnant have finally paid off. It would be nice for my little one to have a playmate.

“Not at all. I think he’s cute. He’s just so quiet,” Taylor points out.

“Well, it’s the quiet ones they say you should be wary of,” I point out, and when the door opens and Jace steps inside, we all go suspiciously silent.

“Ladies.” He tips his hat and makes my pussy clench at the same time. His insistence of being cautious is really starting to wear thin and, although he’s done things tosustainmy needs, hestill hasn’t given me the full experience since the incident with Adam's father.

“Isabel, Eli called and said he’s been trying to get hold of you. He needs you home,” he explains, stepping up behind the couch and leaning over my shoulders so he can frame my belly with his hands.

“I hope you’ve been resting.” He kisses the top of my head and when I look up at him, I roll my eyes.

“I’ve done nothing but rest,” I tell him. Having him on my case was bad enough but now that he’s enlisted Kendra as his backup, I stand no chance whatsoever.

“Guess I better get going.” Isabel looks at us awkwardly as she stands and picks up her purse and after we say our goodbyes, Taylor and Kendra both disappear into the kitchen to get started on dinner. They’ve both been helping out and taking the slack for me since I came out of hospital.

“You sound as if you were having fun.” Jace moves around the couch and flops down beside me. He’s looking tired, and I know he hasn’t been sleeping at night. It probably has something to do with the fact I’m up and down like a yo-yo, but I’m starting to wonder if there's something on his mind.

“We were, it’s great having them here but I missed you,” I admit, resting my head on his shoulders. He’s been so busy with the ranch since we came home, I’ve barely seen him.

“That’s sweet.” He rests his hand on the ridge of my stomach and smiles when he feels our baby fidget against it.

“Is your uncle coming to dinner tomorrow? I was thinking we could make a pot roast.”

“I doubt it, I still haven’t heard anything from him.” I notice his body tense so I place my hand over his.

“Are you okay?” I decide now is the time for him to come clean, he’s snapped at me each time I’ve mentioned his uncle so I’m sure he’s got something to do with Jace’s change in mood.

“I’m fine.” He frowns.

“Don’t lie to me, I know there's something on your mind.” I let him know that I won’t drop this.

“How about the fact the mother of my child got beaten on by a psychopath and she refuses to press charges?” He raises his eyebrow at me.

“We spoke about this. Paul was ill, he’d lost everything, and now he’s getting the help he needs,” I remind him.

“Many men have lost shit, Maddison. There are no excuses for what he did,” he tells me sternly and I know that we’ll forever disagree on this one.

“I’ve known Paul a long time and he’s not a bad person, he was under a lot of pressure, it’s understandable that he went off the rails.”

“Mads, he could have killed you both and?—”

“But he didn’t, we’re both fine. We’re the luckiest people in the world right now, and don’t you think everyone deserves a second chance?” I look up at him hoping that one day he’ll understand.

“You're too good for this word, Maddison MacKenzie.” He slides his hand up to my face and kisses me.

“And don’t you think good girls deserve rewards?” I bat my lashes at him when I see an opportunity.

“Baby, I gave you a reward this morning when I woke you up with my tongue.”

“You did but I was hoping for something else.” I let my palm rest over the front of his jeans and feel him harden.

“Darlin’, you only got six weeks left, I don’t want to take any chances.”

“We’re both fine. The doctor said there are no risks. In fact, I read on the forum that sex is good for the baby. Right up till the end.” Jace loves his facts and I’m hoping I can use some to pursue him because, right now, I’m hornier than ever.

“The doc also said you should be resting,” he reminds me
