Based on how we set the system up, I have about two rounds of calls before they alert the local police department and my emergency contacts.
His face turns red. “I’m not leaving without you, and if I can’t have you, no one else can.”
He flicks the Zippo lighter with his finger, and without a second thought, he drops it.
The flames race around the room, leading to the gas tanks he has around the farm. I flick my eyes to the ceiling, hoping my fire system works.
“I cut the water system. We aren’t getting out of here alive. It’s you and me forever.”

Turning down Amelia’s street, I’m frustrated because I got stuck at work longer than I should have been, and now I’m much later than I originally planned.
But assholes can’t do their job, so I have to stay late to fix everything.
Pulling into her driveway, I see that I still beat her here.
Weird.
I grab my phone and check my texts again to make sure I didn’t miss anything from her.
Turning off my car and opening the door, I hear the fire engines in the distance. I’m not religious, but I always put good thoughts out because I know Sam and Luke are both working tonight.
Shivering at the slight breeze, I grab my zip-up hoodie from my passenger seat and throw it on.
After hip checking my door shut, I walk to the front door, put my code in, and call to my girls as I open the door. “Penny! Ginny! Where are my favorite girls?”
I hear the pitter-patter of Penny’s nails as I put my keys and purse on the island counter.
Bending over, I give her all the pets. “Where’s your sister? Still hiding under the bed when people come around?” I stand and pat her on the head. “Let’s go let you outside so I can get your food out.”
The word food gets her moving, and she darts past me down the hall, only to have to sit and wait for me to open the door. After letting her out, I walk back to the kitchen and grab Penny’s pre-portioned meal out of the fridge. I set it on the counter while I let her back in.
I check my watch again to see if Am has messaged yet and still nothing.
What the fuck.
A little head peeks around the corner when I hear the auto feeder dispense food.
“Hey there, Ginny. Are you going to come out for dinner?”
She looks at me and hisses as she backs up a little as I walk by.
Drama queen only likes Penny, Luke, and Amelia.
Grabbing Penny’s food, I set it on the ground in her designated spot. Penny walks up next to her bowl and waits for her command.
“Okay, Penny.”
When both animals are eating, I grab my phone and sit at the island, pulling up Find Friends. Seeing she’s still at the farm, I shoot her a text because that woman can straight up get so distracted by work.
Me: Hey Hoe. Are you working?
I thought you were just checking a door?
I give it a few minutes but don’t get a message back, and that’s . . . weird.
