The vibrating of his phone breaks into the moment, my body near implosion point as he sets me down.
With a huff, Sam grabs the phone, stealing another kiss from my mouth as he fishes it out of his pocket. “Shit.”
“That’s never a good response.” My hands slide along his chest, feeling his muscles flex under my fingers.
“Almira just arrived.”
My brows furrow. “She did? Surprising. You said that you two were done.”
“Apparently, she disagrees.”
Talk about a mood killer. Reality comes crashing in, reminding me how I just kissed my friend and now, his fuck buddy is here to reclaim him. “Huh.”
“I’m sorry.”
I shrug, letting out a resigned laugh. “Now what?”
He backs off me, leaning against the wall with a groan. “Now, I have to go inside and deal with her.” Sam cocks his head at me, that goofy grin on display. “I had to kiss you, Lexi. I had to know.”
“Know what?”
My question is left hanging in the air as the door opens and Almira sails out. My body seethes with anger as she drapes her arm around Sam, stealing a kiss from the same lips that not two minutes ago were attached to me.
Sam eases her back, offering a nervous chuckle. “I thought you were staying at the hotel.”
“I missed you. Wanted to come and hang out. Hi, Lexi. You look beautiful.”
But I don’t feel beautiful, as once again, I’m relegated to the friend zone when Sam’s A-list beauties come to play.
Suddenly, the fresh air is stifling, and I need to escape the club entirely.
“What are you two doing out here?”
I cock my brow at Sam, tempted to let Almira knowexactlywhat we were doing only moments ago. But what’s the point? She’ll either get mad at me or not care. Either way, it’s obvious from the way she’s leaning against Sam that she’ll be sharing his bed tonight.
Me? I feel like a fool. I don’t need to look like one, too.
“I got overheated inside. Sam was kind enough to watch out for me. I’m leaving now.” The words drop from my mouth like rocks, each one smashing against the pavement.
Right next to my heart, which I stupid enough to entrust to Samuel Bernard.

Iawaken with a blasting headache, a mouth as dry as the Sahara, and an ache in my heart about the turn of events last night.
I wanted to leave straight from the club, but Caroline stole my keys. She was right to do so. I was in no condition to drive. Instead, I crashed in her spare bed, not bothering to change out of my dress.
“Here’s some water and aspirin.”
“Thanks.” Pulling myself to a seated position, I push my hair over my shoulder, sending her a rueful smile. “I made an ass of myself last night.”
“How did you do that?”
“You were there, you saw it. Me and Sam.”
Caroline nods, a knowing smile on her face. “Hard to miss. The entire club saw you two. As soon as Sam walked in, he made a beeline for you. Told you he has a thing for you.”
“If he did, it was short-lived.” Her brow quirks, so I continue. “He kissed me.”
