Page 2 of And Then Came You

“It’s like Moses parting the Red Sea,” I surmise, watching the scene unfold in front of me. My description isn’t far off, if Moses dressed in head-to-toe leather and a smoldering expression. Women huddle around Samuel Bernard, pressed so close I can barely determine where he ends, and they begin.

“See? I told you, he’s drop-dead gorgeous. If the rumors are anything to go by, he’s also got a twelve-inch cock.”

Now I’ve heard everything. Shaking my head at Ramona’s nonsensical statement, I focus on arranging my books on the table. “Don’t stop there. Not only does Samuel Bernard have a twelve-inch cock, but it also ejaculates heroin laced sperm, judging by the crowd’s reaction.”

“MDMA, if you must know.”

My head flies up, shocked by the baritone voice intruding into my conversation.

There, on the other side of the table, not more than a foot away, stands the man of the hour.

Samuel Bernard.

He offers up a smirk as those green eyes flash in my direction, daring me to issue a retort.

Here’s what Samuel Bernard doesn’t know—Ineverback down from a verbal spar, even when the topic of conversation is a stranger’s dick. Pushing my glasses up my nose, I plant my hands on my hips, sending him a withering glare. “That’s a shame. If you weretrulytalented, you wouldn’t require assistance to ensure an orgasm.”

The look on his face is priceless, and I bite back a laugh. Samuel runs a hand along his chiseled jaw, but his gaze never breaks from mine. “Are you calling me out on my work?”

“Is your job delivering orgasms?”

He leans across the table, and I’m acutely aware of our height difference as he ducks his head near mine, his mouth at my ear. “Only if you’re willing.”

The laughter flies from my mouth at Samuel’s smooth pickup line. While I’m sure those words would bring 99.9% of the female population to their knees, I’m that problematic 0.1% that refuses to drool over a man simply because his chest looks like the gods carved it out of stone.

“What’s so funny?”

“Does that line actually work?”

“Not on you, apparently.”

I cover my mouth with my hand, desperate to rein in the giggle. After all, the man is a stranger, and I’m not trying to be a complete hard ass, but the harder I try, the more the laughter insists on making an appearance. The end result is a mix halfway between a cough and snort and earns a smile from Mr. Bernard.

“Did you just snort?”

“Maybe.”

“Here I thought I’d only be delivering orgasms, but instead, I made a woman snort today. I’ve reached a new pinnacle.” With a wink, Samuel turns on his heel, striding the few steps to an adjoining table where a bevy of women immediately surround him, all clamoring for his special blend of dessert.

“What the hell was that about?” Ramona inquires, her eyes wide with curiosity.

“Nothing.”

“It wasn’t nothing. You made the man blush.”

“I did not,” I argue, although I believe I witnessed a slight flush creep over his cheeks. “That man’s ego has a life of its own.”

“He’s earned it. Look at those women, fluttering around him like the second coming of Christ.”

“You’re just jealous that you’re stuck in the cheap seats, helping me.”

“Damn straight. When is my break?” Ramona scowls as she glances at her phone. “Speaking of egos, that was your boyfriend. Again. Why is the man calling my phone? He knows I can’t stand him.”

I rub my hand over my brow, sending Ramona a rueful smile. “Sorry about that. We got into a fight earlier today, and I turned off my phone, so I didn’t have to deal with him.”

“Can you turn it back on so thatIdon’t have to deal with him? Better yet, kick his sorry ass to the curb. I know I’ve asked a million times, because I don’t get it. What do you see in Carl?”

“Damn good question. Who knows?” Grabbing my phone, I press the power button. “I’ll call him now and get this all straightened out. I’ll tell him to leave you alone.”
