“Is it safe for you to drive?” She was mortified, uncertain of what she’d done to cause this sudden change.
Jacob nodded. “I feel great, and the whiskey has worn off. You need to sleep. You’ve got your class tomorrow.” He kissed her cheek before turning toward the door. “I’ll call you. Thank you for tonight.” And with that, he walked out.
Lilly sat motionless for a few minutes, feeling like a complete moron. What the fuck just happened? She paced the bedroom, before finally picking up her phone.

Sabina and Ben arrived fifteen minutes later, demanding every sordid detail. Lilly provided an overview, focusing on his sudden departure.
Ben spoke first. “You did mention that his ex-girlfriend called him earlier. Maybe they’re in the process of reconciling?”
“Are you kidding?” Lilly shrieked. “I asked him if his girlfriend would mind him staying and he said it was his housekeeper.”
“So,” Ben hedged, “he never said he didn’t have a girlfriend.”
Lilly paused, uncertain if he had negated her statement. “I…I don’t think so. Ugh, I’m such an idiot.”
“I don’t know, he was persistent about coming here tonight,” Sabina said, stroking her chin thoughtfully.
“Yeah, he thought he would get laid.” Lilly flounced down on the sofa, sipping her whiskey. She would be a mess for class tomorrow, but that was beside the point. “Hell, even I figured we would sleep together by the end of the night, especially after our last kiss.”
“So, Jacob got up and left after you told him you wouldn’t sleep with him?” Ben inquired.
“I didn’t tell him anything. He pulled away and said I was making it very hard for him to keep his promise. Then he got dressed and left. He practically ran out the damn door.” Lilly shook her head, angry for behaving so foolishly. “He even parted with the classic ‘I’ll call you’ line. I guarantee I’ll never hear from him again.”
“I wouldn’t be so certain,” Sabina replied, “and you owe me fifty pounds.”
Lilly shot her friend a death glare before shaking her head. “Back to life as I know it. Maybe the whole alternative healing session and my discussion about love were too outside the box for him.”
Ben and Sabina gathered Lilly into a human sandwich, and soon they were all laughing. “You did get to see him naked,” Ben remarked slyly.
“Not entirely naked…”
“What I would give to see that man naked,” Ben quipped, making Lilly giggle.
“You and half the world. Jacob is beautiful. It’s an interesting deposit for my memory bank. Okay, besties, I need to sleep. Time for you to either cuddle in or get out.”
Sabina and Ben left a few minutes later, and Lilly crawled into bed, scolding herself for her naivety and forgiving herself for it in the next moment. She wasn’t the first person to fall for Jacob Edmonton’s charms, and she certainly wouldn’t be the last.
