They quickly tell him the name, and Cash nods, looking for tickets.
“Does it even have an airport?” I ask.
Cash shakes his head, “No, it doesn’t. I hired a car to take them to this cute B&B, which is the only one in town, and booked their rooms there for a couple of months. Ideally, I would have liked to have bought a house for them so they had somewhere to go immediately, but we aren’t in the position to do that, and this is the best that we can do with the time frame that we have.”
“I know, man,” I reply.
I would have liked to give them a little bit more security too, but we’ve hired the B&B for a couple of months, and they should be able to find a house that they like in that time. If they don’t, they will have more than enough money to stay a little bit longer if they need to.
When we pull up to the house, we do the last few bits that can’t wait until the morning to be done, and then practically stumble through showers and then fall into bed.
**********
The next morning is a blur of activity, the house did have a printer thankfully, which means we didn’t have to waste time going somewhere public to get everything that we needed printed off.
“Are we just going to deliver it and leave?” Riot suddenly asks. “I would really like to be sure that they are out of this city and safe before we head home.”
“Me too,” I reply.
“I can watch the bank account, but that won’t really tell us anything apart from the fact that the money is being used. We won’t necessarily know what it’s being used for,” Jensen explains. “Although, I suppose I will see a big purchase like a house.”
“You have given them a pretty tight deadline, haven’t you?” Rafe signs, asking Cash.
Cash nods, “Yeah, I figured that if she had a shoebox of savings for when she could finally leave, then she was pretty much ready to go at the drop of a hat.”
“Most likely,” I agree.
“Well, why don’t we wait and see if she goes to the airport, at least if she does, we know that she’s out of the city.” Rafe suggests.
“Yeah, let’s do that.” Riot agrees.
“It might mean that we have to stay here for a couple more days,” Cash points out, “I gave her three, and I don’t think that I can reasonably cut that down. Not without it seeming suspicious. I have already backdated the letter, so it looks like it was sent a month or so ago, and only just got delivered.”
“Oh, that was a good idea,” I reply, impressed. “It will add credibility for sure.”
“That’s what I thought,” Cash replies. “If we hang around and make sure that they leave, then we risk getting back when, if not after, the parents do.”
“I’m willing to risk that,” Jensen replies, “I need to know she is out of the city for my own peace of mind. I know that the fucker is dead, but the dealer isn’t, and he was bigger than just drugs; we all know that. Which means he is a considerable threat.”
“Yeah, I agree,” Riot says as Rafe nods.
“I’m in so long as everyone else is as well,” I reply when they look at me.
Cash smiles, “Good. We can deal with the fallout with the parents. I think in this situation it is well worth it.”
“Agreed,” I reply. “Is everything ready? Can we deliver it now?”
“Yeah, and it’s a Saturday, so hopefully, we are not going to have to wait until she gets home from work to see it, although knowing that she was planning to escape and is most likely working as much as she can in order to save up to do so, she might well be,” Riot says.
Chapter Twenty-One
Trick
“Well, we can wait,” I reply.
We are all on the same page in this situation, and we know that we are willing to wait it out for as long as necessary if we can ensure that they are safe. Unfortunately, we don’t have the means or the time to make sure that they really are safe, but we can at least make sure that they leave the city. The fucker who was going to sell her is dead and won’t be causing either of them any more problems, so really, the only threat now is the dealer, and if he decides to go back on his word, although I don’t really know why he would.
We all get in the truck, Cash holding tightly onto the envelope that has his letter, the details of the booked B&B, plane tickets, the bank information, and the card in. Cash got tickets with aflexible date on them, meaning that she could fly out at any point this month. This plan is flimsy; she could see through it. I mean, why would someone leave a giant inheritance and no house? If she starts asking questions around the town, then she will quickly realize that she has no link there. We are all hoping that she chooses not to though. We are hoping that she sees it as a‘don’t look a gift horse in the mouth’ situation. If she gets worried about where the money has come from, she can take all the information to someone at the bank, and they will reassure her that it's all legitimate. At least the money is.
