Their car left the runway and quickly moved toward the gate they’d so recently forced open. As they left the restricted area of the airport, two police cars joined them. One in front, the other behind.

“Did you hear any names?” Benson asked.

“The guys who grabbed me said Breznik in a couple of sentences.” She gave Yvgeny a wince. “I don’t think they like you or your family much.”

“They are going to like me less very soon,” he growled.

“Mr. Breznik,” Benson said, frowning. “Please don’t threaten people in front of me.”

“That was not a threat,” Yvgeny told him. “I plan on so much litigation their grandchildren will still be in court a hundred years from now.”

Sam elbowed him in the stomach, so he shut his mouth before he could say it was a promise.

“Did they give you any indication as to why they took you?”

Sam looked at him and put one hand on his arm. “I think to hurt Yvgeny,” she said quietly. She turned back to Benson. “If they could have grabbed Nika, I think they would have.”

“Why do you think that?”

“Once they grabbed me, they kept looking for someone else.”

“Where did they find you? I thought you were staying inside the building.”

“I was, but someone dressed in an NYPD uniform asked me to look at another injured person outside the lobby entrance.” She shrugged. “I agreed, but there wasn’t anyone outside with any injuries. He shoved me into a car and slammed the door.”

A growl rumbled out of him before he could stop it. Were the police in on this or had the officer been an actor?

Benson watched him with an assessing gaze. “It’s possible that we have a problem.”

“Yes, one I will find and eliminate.”

Benson rolled his eyes. “I’d like to talk to this problem child before you find and run them out of the city.”

Yvgeny snorted. The man actually had a sense of humor. Perhaps Benson wasn’t a complete loss. “That might be...wise.”

Benson leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees. “I’ve had a chance to talk to Anna Breznik and my counterparts in Interpol.” He rubbed his forehead. “It seems that there have been attacks like the one on your hotel, in several major cities.”

“Which cities?”

“Budapest, Berlin, Geneva.”

“The family has holdings in all of those cities.”

“Ms. Breznik is very...upset.” The way he said it, the hesitation in his voice told Yvgeny Benson had glimpsed the monster behind the human mask she wore.

“I feel sorry for whoever is responsible,” Yvgeny said, giving Benson a wry smile. “My aunt is ruthless in her need to protect the family.”

It was Samantha’s turn to snort. “You’ve just described ninety percent of the women in the world, including me.”

“I believe this is a good time to say, yes, dear.”

She smacked him. “You are ridiculous.”

“Yes, but that’s what you love about me.”

Her cheeks grew heated and she smacked him again. “Shut up.”

Benson sighed. “Please, stop flirting in front of me.”
