For a moment the cop looked confused, then his expression cleared a little. “Are any of them here?”
“I’ve got this,” Lieutenant Benson’s voice preceded the man as he skirted a group of six officers dragging one of the British vampires toward a patrol car.
That wasn’t going to end well. For the car or the officers.
Benson flashed his badge at the officer, who immediately backed up with his hands briefly stretching out, palms facing Benson. “Very good. Thank you, sir.”
Benson stopped a few feet away. “Were you hurt?” he asked Samantha, as if Yvgeny wasn’t even there.
“I’m sure I’ve got a few bruises,” she replied. “What I need is a hot cup of tea and some time with Yvgeny.”
Benson’s eyebrow rose into his hairline, but he didn’t say anything. Perhaps the man was finally learning.
Benson looked at the various men who had tried to kidnap Samantha. When he finally met Yvgeny’s gaze, the detective nodded at him. “Do you need transport?” Not a hint of sarcasm or scorn in his tone. Progress at last.
“Are we free to go?”
“I think it would be best if we all moved any further conversation to another location.” Benson glanced up, and though it was illegal for them to be there, two drones hovered overhead.
“I see your point,” Yvgeny replied, then he called Mason’s name.
“Here, sir,” Mason said, his voice only a few feet behind him.
“Transportation?”
“Two minutes, sir. The airport authority has finally allowed our vehicles through.”
“What’s wrong with the car we came in?”
“Somehow, the no-flat tires, have gone flat.”
“Well, that’s disappointing.” Yvgeny considered Benson. “Would you like to accompany us to the police station, lieutenant? You can ask Samantha questions on the way.”
Sam looked up at him at the same time Benson’s eyebrows tried to climb off his face again.
“We prefer to record any statements made at the station,” he replied. “But we haven’t caught all the players in this mess yet.”
“A delay might allow them to escape,” Yvgeny suggested, as if it didn’t really matter to him at all.
“Good point,” Benson nodded again. “Thank you for the invitation. I’ll take you up on that.”
A collection of vehicles approached their location at the end of the runway, escorted by a few airport security cars. Several police cars, a couple of police vans, a SWAT truck, and one of Yvgeny’s black limos pulled up.
SWAT and regular police began moving Sam’s attackers into the vans.
Mason and Magnus walked with Yvgeny, Sam, and Benson and got into the limo. Magnus rode in the front with the driver while Mason also rode in the back.
Benson wasted no time and began asking questions as soon as his seatbelt was fastened. “Did you recognize any of the men who took you?”
“No.”
“Did they say anything to you?”
“No. It was weird how silent they were.”
“They didn’t talk to each other?”
“Not really. It was mostly short sentences, mostly in French, I think. I did figure out that they had multiple plans because when it was obvious Yvgeny was following us, one of them said, move to plan B, but that was all they said in English. The rest of them grunted in that way you guys do when you don’t think words are needed.”
