“I’ve stuck with you since the day we met,” he said, putting his hands on her hips and pulling her closer. “I knew you were someone special and asked to be assigned to you.”
Coming into contact with his body made it hard to think, but she didn’t want to back away. “I thought that was frowned upon.”
“Officially, yes. Unofficially...” He shrugged. “It happens all the time.” He leaned down and kissed her, slow and sweet.
When he pulled back, they were both breathing hard. “I need to know, Abby. Am I in this by myself or are you with me?”
She took him in with all her senses and found no hesitation inside her for this man. “You’re...I...” She took in a deep breath, let it out slowly, then said, “I love you, too.”
He kissed her for long minutes, until a knock at the front door pulled them apart.
“My family,” she whispered.
“I forgot all about them,” he whispered back.
She giggled and smacked him on the arm. “I better let them in before they start looking in the windows.”
She took a couple of steps toward the door, then stopped and turned back. “I’m in need of a roommate.”
His grin was back. “I’m in need of a room.”
“Excellent.” She nodded and opened the door. Her oldest brother stood there. He examined her, then glanced over her shoulder at Smitty. “Everything okay in here?”
“Everything is great.” She glanced at Smitty too, and he joined her, putting an arm around her waist.
“Just clearing up a few details, since I’m moving in.”
Her brother’s eyebrows went up. “Moving in?”
“Smitty is Bandit Creek’s newest deputy sheriff,” Abby told her brother.
Her brother shook his head and rubbed the back of his neck. “You were right, mom,” he yelled over his shoulder. “You win the bet.”
“They bet on us getting together?” Smitty sounded disgusted.
Abby snorted again, glanced at him, and burst out laughing.
