Georgia started looking around, too. She wanted out.
“Well, if our builder really did like late-night mysteries, he probably made this useless looking light fixture the door trigger.” She reached up to yank on the dull metal housing. It rotated easily to the left and the door opened a crack.
Surprise lit up her insides and she smiled in triumph. “What did I tell you?”
Peter grinned and shook his head. “What movie did that come from?”
“It didn’t come from a movie; it came from watching cartoons when I was a kid.”
He raised an eyebrow at her and grinned. “Right.”
He set the flashlight on the floor, faceplate pointed straight up so the light bounced off of the ceiling, illuminating the space, then stole up to the door and peeked outside.
“Can you see anything?” Georgia whispered.
“No. There’s too much foliage. I’m going out.” He looked at her. “Stay here.”
She nodded with only the barest hesitation. She’d agreed to do what he said, even if she didn’t like it.
He slipped out, closing the door so only a sliver of moonlight seeped in.
Georgia waited, for what seemed to be a long time before he came back as quietly as he’d left.
“There’s no one around, but we can’t leave yet.”
“Why?”
He looked at her, staring at her legs below the hem of her skirt. “You’re not suitably dressed.”
Heat infused her face.
“Oh. Right.”
“As soon as it’s dark, I’ll go out and find something for you to wear.”
“And something to drink, too?” She licked dry lips in anticipation.
“Yes, though I’ll have to be careful about that. We don’t want to get sick from any of the local bugs.”
“Oh, yeah, I forgot.”
Peter sat next to the door and stared out through the crack.
There wasn’t much point in standing, so she joined him on the floor, leaning against the opposite wall. She glanced up. The arch above her head reminded her of a picture of a cathedral in France she’d once seen.
“Why don’t you have a nap?” Peter suggested. “We’ve got a long night ahead of us.”
“What about you?”
“I’ll be fine. All I need is ten minutes and I’ll be set for a while.”
A ten-minute nap? Who did he think he was, some Special Forces guy?
“Ten minutes, that’s it?”
“What?” He turned to gaze at her, his expression innocent.
Georgia didn’t believe that for a second.
