“I just want you to be safe,” he told her as he cuddled her close. “That’s why I have rules. For your safety and care.”
“I know, Daddy. I’m sorry.” He held her for a few more moments.
“Well, I have good news.”
“What’s that?” she asked.
“We get to blow this joint. And you’re going in style.”

Well, this wasn’t exactly how she’d thought her first time on a toboggan would go.
But Bebe couldn’t say that she wasn’t ecstatic to be on it.
She just felt bad that Corbin had to pull her. He had to be tired.
“Are you all right, Daddy?” she asked worriedly. She had the easy part. She was bundled up under blankets on the toboggan while he worked hard to get them to the truck before night fell.
They had about three hours, he’d told her. But she was still scared they’d get lost or have to turn back.
Or that he’d injure himself.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing since there wasn’t a clear path. However, they managed.
Still, it took them hours to get back to the truck.
However, when they arrived, they were met by a sight she hadn’t expected.
There were dozens of people there. Most of them were from Sanctuary Ranch, but there were also people from Wishingbone, including the sheriff and two deputies.
They’d all come out to help try and find them.
But the person she was most happy to see was frowning as he strode toward them.
No surprises there.
“What the fuck happened?” Hayes snapped. “Why isn’t she walking?”
Bebe tried to get up, but Corbin grabbed her. She expected him to force her down. Instead, he lifted her straight into Hayes’ arms.
She didn’t expect Hayes to catch her. Or to hold her close.
Or for her to lose it in his arms.
“Ahh, girl, don’t start that now,” he said gruffly. “I didn’t mean to yell. You’re safe. You’re safe.”
She cried as Corbin briefly explained to Hayes what had happened. She was aware of other people around them, talking. But all she could hear were Corbin and Hayes.
“Right. Better give you back to your man before he rips you away from me, girl.”
She tilted her head back to look at him.
“Stop crying, huh?” he murmured, looking disgruntled. “It’s upsetting Corbin.”
Corbin took her from Hayes, kissing her cheek. “I don’t think it’s just me you’re upsetting.”
Yeah. She knew Hayes loved her. Like a little sister. That was something she had never had and she was going to hold onto it tight.
