“I did it for you. The doctors explained to me how their program works. For the initial sessions, patients stay at the clinic full time. After a few weeks, the doctors encourage patients to return home and find a trustworthy network of family, or friends, to give them support. They said their research has shown that stable and loving relationships are key to recovery.” I pause to let my words sink in.

When they do, she gasps, “What are you saying?”

I grin at her sweet reply as if she’s afraid to believe what her ears have just heard.

“I’m saying that we should bring Rita over here to live with us, at least for a while, until she gets better.”

Maria hugs me tight. “Thank you, Wes. I miss her so much.”

When I notice she’s sniffing, I pull away and dry the thick tears rolling down her cheeks. Her reaction surprises me because it’s so out of character.

I frown. “Hey. No need to cry so hard. This is a good thing.”

“It is and I’m so happy. Finally, I’ll be able to take care of her.”

“That’s exactly why I’m suggesting it. I remember you told me how much you wanted to do this.”

Her smile becomes wider and the glint in her eyes makes my heart thud faster.

“What aren’t you telling me?” I ask.

She shrugs but I don’t buy her casual attitude. Her fingers tremble and a blue vein throbs like crazy in her neck.

“It’s just that I’m also happy because my mom can help us in a few months. We’ll need a hand with the baby.”

“What?” I yelp.

“Yeah, we’re pregnant.”

“How come?” My ears buzz.

“My doctor said it’s a one in a million chance of this happening, but it did.”

My heart bursts at the seams. I cover her lips with mine, tender and softly, pouring all my love into that kiss.

When I pull back, I smirk. “Told you. That jacket is my lucky charm.”

“That might be true. On the other hand, your love has healed me, made me whole again, heart, body and soul.” She dusts my lips with hers and adds, “So, there’s that.”

“Yes, there is that and so much more. Come here.”
