I sighed. “William, do you realize you’re flirting with me?”

He looked taken aback. “I—I’m not.”

“You’re opening up. Letting me see the real you. I guess it’s not necessarily flirting, but this is how you talk to a woman.”

“This is how I talk to you because I trust you.”

I was getting more and more into William’s mind, and suddenly realized he was afraid of something. Was he afraid of himself? Or women? Or both? “Okay, you have a good point there. We have built some trust. Do you do that with other girls?”

“No. I usually avoid talking as much as possible until they leave me alone.”

“Solid plan.” I squeezed his hand again. “But not productive. Tell me what you do for work.”

He explained that he ran his father’s company, but I didn’t detect any passion for the position.

“I already know your profession,” he said. “What do you do for fun?”

“A follow-up question. Very good.” I gave him a nod. “A group of friends and I buy and open abandoned storage units.”

“What does that entail?” The tone of his voice told me he was completely confused.

“Before we go tonight, give me your number. I’ll send you a link to our YouTube channel.”

“Tell me your number.”

“You’ll remember it?”

“I remember everything.”

I rattled it off, curious if he’d really be able to get it into his phone before he forgot it. The song slowed, and William’s attention shot up and behind me. “I think Logan wants you back.” He stopped dancing, let me go, and gave me a bow. “Thank you for speaking with me.”

I narrowed my eyes and studied him. He seemed sincere, and I was a sucker for someone who wanted to change. “I’m not sure we’re finished with this conversation. Text me.”

“I will.” He gestured behind me, and I turned to find Logan waiting. Right before William stepped away, he whispered, “I apologize if my sister upset him.”

“He’ll get over it,” I said. Then I gave Courtney a nod and slipped my hand through Logan’s offered elbow.

He looked delicious in his black button-down shirt and tux. Silver streaks adorned one side of the jacket, and his art deco silver mask matched. I’d almost melted under his touch as we’d danced, and now that he was once again in front of me, everything else fell away.

“Where are we headed?” I asked.

“To the patio, where hopefully people will leave us alone.”

Chapter 20

-Logan-

A ribbon of dread ran through me as I watched William lead Victoria away. The guy was handsome and super rich. He said he wasn’t out to steal her, but if he was smart, he would try.

My stomach twisted, and I wasn’t sure if it was because of William or the fact that Courtney stood at my side.

Ten years ago, she’d walked away and never looked back. I hadn’t heard from her since. I hadn’t seen her. I’d done everything I could to keep her from my mind, which had taken me years to master, and now she and I were about to spend five torturous minutes together dancing.

“You two look happy,” Courtney said as I gently placed my hand on her back. Her dress left all of her skin exposed. I could feel the muscles of her shoulders, and suddenly missed Victoria’s softer and smoother exterior.

I decided not to respond to Courtney’s comment and cleared my throat. “Why did you want to talk to me?”

“I feel that I owe you an apology.”
