Hannah’s head swiveled back and forth between the speakers.
Courtney sniffed. “We were young. I wasn’t ready to settle down.”
“You still haven’t settled down,” Greta pointed out.
“Maybe I’m waiting for the right guy to come back around.” Courtney looked at me as she said it. She was talking about Logan, but whether or not she was just trying to get under my skin, I couldn’t tell.
I figured I may as well fire back. “Any prospects at the moment?”
“One,” Courtney said as she raised her cup to her lips.
Natalie interrupted our conversation by putting a wireless microphone around her head and tapping it. “Hello?”
I winced at the overabundance of volume.
“Even I can hear you,” Greta said loudly.
“Sorry, Grandma.” Natalie shot her a smile then turned to the crowd at large. “Kyle’s family has a tradition of country line dancing at their weddings.”
“Because we’re awesome.” Hannah held out her fist, and I bumped it with mine.
Natalie circled a finger, indicating the whole room. “Since we do things bigger and better than most people, we decided to amp it up.”
“What a waste of time,” Courtney muttered.
“And saving the desert is better?” Greta asked.
Courtney raised one eyebrow in reply.
Greta leaned toward Courtney. “I thought you and Natalie were close.”
“We were.”
She didn’t add “until Natalie moved to the west coast,” but it was implied.
“So why are you giving her the cold shoulder?” Greta asked.
“I’m not.” Courtney shrugged. “She’s busy.”
Interesting. Greta had said that Natalie had been shunned for relocating here, but I hadn’t believed it until now. Did something as small as moving really mean that they couldn’t be friends?
Would something like this happen to Kyle and me? Could he get pulled into their drama?
Then I remembered the way he’d helped me through high school. Honestly, he’d dealt with plenty of mean girls on my behalf, he could probably handle whatever Natalie’s family could throw at him.
Natalie continued. “We’re going to learn a basic line dance and perform it at the reception!”A familiar tune started, and I smiled at Greta.
“Hey, it’s your favorite.”
“The booty song?”
“That’s the one.”
Shehumphedbut stood as Natalie waved us all out onto the main floor.
“This is going to be fun,” Hannah said.
“I’m hoping some of you know this one,” Natalie said. “It’s basic, but we’re going to spice it up.”
