“Oh, I know.” I knew all too well. “Logan, Greta is Natalie’s grandmother.” Only then did I realize that this might be Courtney’s grandma as well. However, I hadn’t noticed any recognition on his part, so either he hadn’t met her before, or Greta was a great-aunt or something.
“Good to meet you,” Greta said with a glimmer in her eyes.
It was our turn to go through the revolving door. We spilled out just as the next stretched Hummer limo pulled up.
Greta made a face and glared at a nearby hotel employee. “You’d better have a stool for me.”
“Yes, ma’am.” The guy scrambled toward a nearby wooden step.
“Demanding much?” I teased.
Greta grunted. “I’ve tried to get into these things without one, and it’s a disaster.” She glanced at Logan. “Unless your man there wants to push from behind while you try to pull me in.”
“I’m not unwilling,” Logan said with a laugh.
“You don’t know what I had for dinner last night.” Greta winked.
I chuckled. This had been a brilliant idea.
The vehicle pulled up, the driver came around to open the door, and then helped Greta in. Logan assisted me, and I followed Greta to the far end.
White leather seats lined the left side of the interior, while a half circle couch sat at the back. A bar lay across from the door. I moved to the couch and settled in. Logan made sure Greta was comfortable on my left before he sat on my right. Two more couples piled in but stayed by the bar where they started going through drinks and talking amongst themselves.
Perfect.
As soon as we pulled out, I leaned closer to Greta. “Can I ask you a few questions about the family?”
“Looking for gossip?” Greta didn’t sound the least bit offended.
“Let’s call it vetting.” I liked Natalie but wanted to know a little more about her background.
Greta considered me. “Fine, but for every question you ask, I get to ask the two of you one as well.”
I glanced at Logan, who said, “Fine with me.”
“Okay.” I spoke before she could. “I met Courtney and William, and she talked about the west coast relatives. What’s up with that?”
“Ah.” Greta set her hands one on top of the other in her lap. “My dad is where the money started. I have three brothers. One of them moved from New York to California a good forty years ago. He never much liked the snobbery of New York, and he only visited two or three times before he passed a few years back. I didn’t have a problem with him, but the rest of the family saw it as a betrayal.”
“How are you related to Natalie and Courtney?”
Greta held up a hand. “Nope, my turn.”
I braced for impact as she considered her words.
“How did you two meet?” She shoved a finger at Logan. “And it had better be a good story.”
Logan looked at me, and I waved at him to tell it. “I’m from a little town called Big Bear, Alaska. My best friend’s dad died at the beginning of the summer, and Shane came back for the funeral. His high school girlfriend still lives in town, and she was in charge of my friend’s dad’s estate. Selling the antiques and stuff like that.”
“Is she good?” Greta asked.
“She’s really good.” I pulled out my phone to show some of Rachel’s items as Logan continued.
“There was a lot of stuff, so Rachel, the girl in town, called Victoria in as backup. Shane and Rachel started making eyes at each other, which left me and Victoria to one another’s company.”
“Logan and I took all these pictures.” I handed my phone to Greta, who produced a pair of reading glasses from her cleavage and slowly scrolled through. “These are nice.” She glanced at Logan over the spectacles. “Go on.”
“Shane and Rachel wanted to do stuff together but were too chicken to go by themselves, so we went along too.”
