“Duh.”
She opened her mouth, likely to whip out a scathing retort, but an alarm from her phone interrupted. She narrowed her eyes at it, then met my gaze as she turned it off. “Time to go.”
“Already?” I asked.
She stood, then held out her hand. “We need to get downstairs to our next wedding activity.”
My fingers slid into Victoria’s, and while I didn’t use her as leverage to stand, I reveled in the tingle that went up my arm at the contact. “What is our destination?” I asked.
She shrugged. “Something that requires walking shoes.” Her expression darkened. “And maybe animals.”
I opened my mouth to ask if she wanted to get out of said activity—I knew how she felt about dogs—but her lips dissolved into her usual smile.
“So, I’m thinking we can tell my family that because of the long distance that we’re taking things slow.”
I frowned at the change in topic and pivoted. “That kiss you gave me out there didn’t look at all slow.”
Her eyebrow shot up. “The kiss I gave you? What about the ambush kiss you assaulted me with?”
“Yours was steamier.” I wasn’t lying, and frankly, my insides were still recovering from it.
“Because you made it sound like it needed to be convincing for your ex.” Her tone strayed into irritated territory, but the smirk on her lips told me she wasn’t mad.
“I was convinced.” I smiled but didn’t want to give the subject of Courtney any more space in my brain.
Victoria scowled at my grin but couldn’t hold it for more than a few seconds before she started laughing. “Well, now you know I’m a good kisser.”
“Are you allowed to bestow that title on yourself?” I asked.
“It’s a proven fact.”
“I’m going to need a wider data set to be sure.”
“You wish.
“What if I do?”
She made a face. “Seriously, all I’m going to tell my family is that we’re still working things out. Yes, we like each other, but nothing is concrete.”
I squeezed her hand. “I did say I’d be your fake boyfriend for the weekend.”
“You did, didn’t you?”
Chapter 9
-Victoria-
Thankfully, we didn’t meet Logan’s ex or her brother going back to the elevator. I cast a quick glance at Logan as we entered. Back in Big Bear, I’d joked with Rachel and her mom that Logan had some sort of dark secret that he’d been keeping and that’s why he still wasn’t married. Had I been right?
A part of me had wanted to bully it out of him, but the stricken look on his face as Courtney had been speaking to him outside had held me back.
I knew I often needed time to get my thoughts together before expressing them, and I vowed to give Logan however long he needed.
That hadn’t stopped me from speculating.
They’d dated for three years. He had obviously loved her, but the feeling wasn’t mutual.
How could she not love Logan? He had so much going for him. Frankly, one of his only faults was living in the middle of nowhere.
