Logan:Instead of “I made a hundred pancakes today” it’s “I slaved over a hot stove to provide sustenance for those in need.”

I snorted, re-read his text, then answered.

Victoria:By those in need do you mean people who are hungry?

Logan:Exactly! They were suffering from a lack of nourishment, and I provided relief.

Victoria:Wow…

Logan:Wow isn’t dramatic enough.

A giggle tried to tumble from my lips, but I bit it back and sent him a selfie of my flat stare.

Victoria:Does the visual help?

Logan:Indeed! The included photo escalates the statement from mundane to notable.

Victoria:Only notable?

Logan sent a nodding gif.

I laced my fingers together and stretched them before cracking my knuckles. “Okay, buddy, you want to have a thesaurus war? You picked the wrong girl to out-dramatize.”

Chapter 2

-Logan-

I grinned at the photo of Victoria. Her blond hair cascaded in thick curls framing her round face, long eyelashes, and pink lips. The dark gleam in her green eyes and the obviously forced stoic expression made me laugh.

Victoria:Does the visual help?

Logan:Indeed! The included photo escalates the statement from mundane to notable.

Victoria:Only notable?

Logan:You’re going to have to redouble your efforts if you plan to outwit me.

I pictured her giving me that “challenge accepted” look she should patent, and almost laughed out loud.

Mr. Wall, one of the bar’s regulars cleared his throat. The guy had been old when I’d been a kid, but he’d somehow hung on into his eighties. Did anyone balk at an eighty-four-year-old man dressed in worn overalls drinking during the middle of the day?

Nope.

He’d be eighty-five in a few weeks. We were going to have a big party at the Magnificent Moose for him.

“You talking to a pretty girl?” Mr. Wall asked.

“She is pretty.”

“Is she your girlfriend?” the old man said.

“Nah.”

My phone buzzed. I waited for Mr. Wall to take a drink before I looked at it.

Victoria:Today I coerced a woman into expanding her wardrobe so she could be more desirable to members of the opposite sex.

I made a face. Victoria could do better than that.
