Victoria:Be right out. You’re saving me from an awkward conversation.
Logan:Super Logan to the rescue!
I looked up to tell William that I had to go but found him also studying his phone. Should I wait until he was finished before announcing my departure?
William slid the device into his pocket and said, “My sister is here. I need to go meet her.”
“Oh.”Whew.“Sounds good.”
William gave me another nod. “Thank you for allowing me to speak with you.”
“You’re welcome.” I waited until he was halfway across the room before I followed. Kyle gave me a wave from another table, and I glared back, wondering if Natalie was trying to set me up with her cousin.
My sneakers slapped on the tile as I walked through the ornate lobby and out into the cool, humid morning.
The first thing I saw was Logan. Tall. Handsome. Wearing an outfit similar to William’s but really rocking it. He’d grown a five o’clock shadow since I’d seen him last, and man, did it look good. It took me several steps before I noticed the woman standing near Logan and a few more steps to sense the almost shimmering tension between them.
“Logan?” I asked at the same moment William said, “Courtney.”
Logan jumped, and his gaze turned to me. His lips were pulled into a tight line, and his nostrils flared.
He was angry, and it had to be about the tall brunette in the sleeveless white blouse, blue capris, and what could only be called sexy heels.
Logan met my gaze, and before I knew what was happening, something flashed between us. A heat that I’d hoped to feel from him but hadn’t expected upon his arrival, if ever.
He strode toward me like a man on a mission, and the way he locked me with a predatory gaze rooted me in place.
What was he doing? Why did he look so good doing it? Why couldn’t I breathe?
“Hey, baby,” he said in a husky voice.
I opened my mouth to ask, “Baby?” but before I could get the word out, one of his hands slid around my waist and the other around my neck.
I’d been frozen, but now everything short-circuited as he pulled me to him. My skin turned into molten lava, and my legs went numb.
What was he doing? Was this his idea of a joke?
Apparently not, because a split second later, his lips engulfed mine.
Chapter 8
-Logan-
Seeing Courtney had yanked me ten years into the past. To the moment she’d rejected me. When I’d had to fight back anger and hurt as she told me she didn’t love me. That she’d never loved me. That I’d been her boy toy, her eye candy, and nothing more.
I’d loved her.
Three years together and she’d walked away—in front of her family and everyone else in the restaurant—like I hadn’t meant a thing to her.
Then Victoria appeared. Like always, she looked both adorable and sexy, and my breath caught in my throat.
It was stupid—so stupid. I knew I didn’t have anything to prove to Courtney, but my jealous heart did. I wanted her to hurt the way I had. To be shocked, angry, and helpless.
Did it make sense? Of course not. It had been a decade. Courtney was probably on her third husband. Nothing I did should matter to her, but suddenly I had to show Courtney that I was over her. That I’d moved on. Even if it wasn’t entirely true.
I’d imagined kissing Victoria more than a few times, and as I approached her, I felt like a man on top of the world.
We’d been close before, but not like this. I knew I should have asked for permission, but I was in reactionary mode and didn’t want Courtney to think I was weak, so I kissed Victoria.
