Mom:Want a ride home after breakfast?
Breakfast was still an hour away, and I didn’t think I had the fortitude to wait here that long, not to mention endure a meal where my family would hold me captive until I answered all of their questions about Logan.
Victoria:Nah. I’ve got a bunch of work to do. I’m heading out in a few. Thanks though!
Mom:You sure?
Victoria:Positive.
Mom:See you for lunch this week?
I sighed, knowing that she’d want all the details about Logan. Honestly, I was surprised that she wasn’t outside my room right now. Hannah must be holding her back.
Victoria:I’ll be there.
I’d spent quite a bit of time making sure my suitcase was in order, so it didn’t take long for me to organize the rest as if I were playing a Tetris game, where if I lost, I would fall into a fiery pit. Once I finished, I did a last sweep of the rooms, made the bed, arranged a rideshare to pick me up, grabbed the two key cards, and headed for the elevator.
The silent prayer I said begging not to have to see Courtney or William was answered, and I made it to the lobby without being accosted. I was almost out the door when I heard my name.
“Vici!”
I stopped in my tracks, knowing it was Kyle.
What was he doing here? Shouldn’t he and Natalie be up in their room? Or off on their honeymoon?
“Wait a second.” Running feet pounded behind me, and I slowly turned.
Sure enough, Kyle, grinning from ear to ear, was coming toward me. He wore a T-shirt, shorts, and a pair of tennis shoes. “You were going to leave without saying goodbye?”
“I’m still mad at you about the animal shelter.”
He winced. “Yeah, I owe you dinner for that.”
“You owe me anexpensivedinner for that.”
He looked contrite. “Still. You were sneaking away.”
I winced. “Sorry, I got caught up in the idea of getting back to work.”
Kyle put a hand on his chest. “Work is more important than me?”
“Of course not.” I let my bag go and held my arms out for a hug. He walked into it and wrapped me so tight I couldn’t breathe. “Congratulations,” I managed to say.
“Thank you for coming.” He let me loose but kept his hands on my shoulders. “Things went well with Logan?”
“You noticed?”
“Duh.” Kyle stared into my eyes and held my gaze. I swear he could look into my soul, which meant he could see my inner perfectionist in her full glory. “And you’re okay?”
I shrugged. “Not sure yet.” It wasn’t worth it to try to lie to him; he’d get it out of me eventually, and the sooner I left, the sooner he could get back to his new wife.
“Same stuff as last time?” Kyle asked.
I nodded.
“How bad?”
Kyle had been the one I’d called after Duncan, the guy from college, had left me. He’d convinced me to go to therapy, and that’s how I’d figured out that this all stemmed from my mother encouraging me to be as good as I could at everything because I’d never look like the other girls.
