“Far too many.” My answer is immediate.
“Exactly,” he agrees. “Can you see where my concern lies now?”
It only takes me a moment to guess.
“The seizures. They’re aggravating the declining progress,” I conclude with an arched eyebrow. “Then what about Domino? He doesn’t have seizures.”
“He smokes, drinks, and masturbates far too much,” Matteo says in a ‘matter-of-fact’ tone. “He’s doing enough to his body, matched with his constant anger tantrums, to exhilarate the decline. Compared to his voluntary actions, Eva having seizures is involuntary and due to her rapidly changing environment that spikes her state of body and mind negatively.”
He’s right.
“So the goal has to be to minimize the seizures and any emotional spikes,” I summarize but frown. “Why would you let her join a fight club when that puts her at a direct risk of getting hit in the head and having a seizure?”
“She needs a form of outlet, or else those same emotions she isn’t expelling with her training are going to eat her up mentally until she has anger management issues like Domino, who enjoys throwing tantrums left and right because he thinks he can,” he summarizes. “Or worse. She can fall into a blind rage to the point it’ll take multiple people to stop her from being labeled insane.”
Fuck…
“And her medication?”
“Will be changed and upped on dose based on a tittering system to avoid the risk of side effects.”
He’s a lot smarter than I’d like to give credit for. Smarter and extremely talented to be running an Empire so successfully and willing to become a Ruthless King with a set of strangers.
There has to be a deeper motive. He can’t be wishing to help Eva to this extent without some sort of advantage that outweighs everything.
“What are you after?” I can’t wrap my head around him being protective, supportive, and willing to offer his services to Eva. They have history together, yes, but for him to hold up to his bargain all these years later sounds far too fishy to believe.
“I’m on the same path as my Ruthless Kings.” He doesn’t appease my curiosity with his answer. “Kindle havoc that leads to immense obsession, and when everything aligns in place, we lay out our final move. Vengeance.”
“You don’t benefit from that.”
“And who said that?”
“I say that.”
“You say that because you don’t see the vision I see, Aries.” He turns his back on me, slipping his hands into his pockets while he stares above at the starry night sky. It’s a simple action, but it also proves he doesn’t fear me. He is confidently implying that I don’t have the guts to hurt him.
I wouldn’t be given the privilege of taking my last breath if I tried, thanks to his hidden protectors surrounding us.
They’re good at concealing themselves. I’ll give them that.
I’m still the better bodyguard.
I won’t test that theory out today.
“Unconsciously, you undermine your Queen’s potential. Just like so many in our society. You see a woman and not an heirwho not only has the privilege of claiming two Empires but can easily rule a third.”
“And who is willing to give their entire Empire to Evangeline?”
Prescott is a given. Leighton is a maybe.
The third…
“Me.”
Watching as he looks over his shoulder to acknowledge my stunned gaze entices the corner of his lips to rise. To allow those set of white teeth to come to the limelight and accentuate this man’s pride.
The scariest part of it all is that he means every word. His intentions are clear, and he’s telling me not as a warning.
