“When I saw you, I was fucking terrified Killian. I knew I was going to fail as a dad. It’s not an excuse, it's just an explanation. I knew that when it came to you, I was going to be a shitty dad just like mine because I saw myself in you. When I saw you, I saw my past. I hated how you made me think of that,” I say as tears start to form in my eyes, but I don’t let them fall. “As you got older, things got harder and then the love of my life was dying. I had no way to control it so instead I tried to control you which I regret every day. Like I said, I have no excuse, I just wanted to explain to you.”
“Why didn’t you come sooner?” Killian asks, his cold stare still present.
“Because I wasn’t ready. I wanted to give you time,” I explain. “What do I have to do to be your dad again, Killian?”
Killian downs the whiskey before slamming it on the counter.
He then looks me dead in the eye, in all seriousness. “I want you to bring back Reign.”
A pang of hurt hits my stomach. “You know I can’t do that.”
Killian leans forward. “Trust me, I know.” He takes off his shirt and my eyes go to the huge scar on his chest where Reign’s heart is. “Every morning when Luna and I work out together I take off my shirt because I don’t like working out with a shirt. And every day whenever I’m not wearing a shirt Luna always looks at this scar and asks me something.”
“What does she ask you?”
“Why did mommy give you, her heart?” Killian says and I swear hurt fills up his eyes. He looks pained. “Every fucking time I hear that question, this heart, Reign’s heart, breaks. I feel like breaking apart. I don’t know the answer. I can’t answer that question and every time she asks that question, I hate it. So instead of answering I always tell her to ask me another day. And she keeps asking me and I never know what to say,” Killian explains. “So, the only way I’ll forgive you, other than the impossible, is if you answer that question for my daughter.”
At this point I’ll do anything I can for him.
I lost the love of my life and I only have my children left.
I realized I lost everything when Aria passed.
And Killian means the world to Aria.
I always knew Aria felt closer and protective over Killian because he’s always had a hard time.
“I will.”
Killian nods his head before leaving the kitchen. “Follow me.” I follow Killian all the way up to Luna’s room. He knocks before opening the door. She’s on her bed coloring and looks up at us when we walk inside her room. “Luna, baby, come here.” Luna gets off her bed and walks towards Killian. She looks at me with a confused expression on her face before looking at Killian. “Remember that question you ask me every day about the scar on my chest.”
Luna nods her head. “Yea.”
“I want you to ask him.” Killian nods his head towards me.
Luna looks at me with a skeptical look on her face. “Who is he?”
“Your grandpa.”
“Like dyado back in Bulgaria?” Luna’s eyes sparkle when she asks that.
I can tell she loves her grandparents, especially since they helped raise her.
Killian looks at me. “Yea but he’s, my dad. Ask him the question, Luna.”
Luna turns her attention back to me with those big blue eyes. “Why did my mommy give my daddy her heart?”
She looks genuinely so confused why Reign’s heart is in Killian’s chest. It’s so clear to everyone but her because she wasn’t born yet and she’s still a kid.
The world hasn’t destroyed her yet with the power of love or heartbreak.
I crouch down to her level. “Well, your mom and dad fell in love. She couldn’t see your dad pass, so she gave him her heart to let him live. Reign, your mom, was a very generous and selfless person like your grandparents from Bulgaria. She saved my son, your dad, so he could live and raise you. Your mom loved your dad and love like that isn’t easy to find.”
Luna looks at Killian sadly, almost like she knows. She wraps her arms around Killian and hugs him tightly, pressing her hand against his chest.
Like she fucking knows.
Killian tears up but he doesn’t let a tear fall. He looks up at me and smiles softly.
A weight lifts off my shoulder and I take a deep breath before looking out the window.
It’s almost like Aria is watching over me and taking care of me from above.
I can’t wait to join you,amore.
The End
