“Thank you.” The way she’s looking at me makes me feel things I’ve never felt before.

“You’re welcome.”

My brain fires a warning, like a shot in the dead of night, whispering a haunting melody in my ears. You’re in deep. This won’t end well.

CHAPTER 41

Alexis

The guilt eats at me as I stare at myself in the mirror of the private faculty restroom. Why did I let this happen?

One minute, I’m so angry at him that I want to scratch his eyes out. The next, I’m begging for his come as he fucks me into oblivion.

Grabbing my cell phone from the pocket of my backpack, I text Sophia. I need some advice, and I know she’ll understand better than anyone.

Biting my lip, I look at the mirror again before slipping my phone into my pocket and heading to the restroom door. I gingerly open it, peering down the hallway.

Good. The coast is clear.

I dart out, making it a few steps before heels click on the floor behind me. I walk faster, hoping I can make it to the exit before whoever it is catches up with me. The last thing I need is to answer a barrage of questions about why I was in the private faculty restroom.

“Lexi,” a familiar voice trills, sending chills down my spine.

Oh shit. Of all fucking people.

Pasting a fake smile on my lips, I slowly turn around. “Hey, Jessica.”

She bounds up to me, her gaze critical as she studies me from head to toe. “Do you know if Professor Whitmore is available? I knocked on his office door about ten minutes ago, but he didn’t answer.” Her smile reminds me of a Chesire cat as she arches one perfectly manicured brow. “I swear he was in there. I heard noises.”

Panic swirls inside me, making my palms sweaty. I hoist my backpack higher, trying to appear calm and collected. “I met with him after class to discuss my assignment. But I started feeling sick. He escorted me to the restroom and then left.”

“Oh.” She stares at me blankly. I don’t know if she believes me or not.

My phone beeps, and I quickly pull it out. I need to text Evan ASAP and tell him about this conversation.

Holding up my phone, I give her a fake smile. “It’s Sophia. I’ve gotta run. She’s meeting me to make sure I’m okay.”

Jessica flutters her fingers. “Bye.”

I don’t answer as I spin around, my fingers flying over my phone, texting Evan.

Please let him read it before Jessica makes it to his office. If our stories don’t align, we’re screwed.

CHAPTER 42

Alexis

Exiting the building, I suck in deep breaths of oxygen, berating myself for being so careless.

Anxiety courses through me as I look at the screen.Shit. He hasn’t read it yet. Come on, Evan.

My breathing is too rapid, and my vision dims, making me lightheaded.

My gaze wanders around, stopping on a nearby maple tree. The leaves are beginning to change color, signaling that fall is around the corner. I study the different colors while focusing on my breathing.

My phone beeps, and I look down at it, relieved to see Evan’s name on the screen. I changed his contact name to “Asshole Stepbro” during class after I saw the grade on my paper.

ASSHOLE STEPBRO: Thanks for the heads up. It’ll be fine. I’ll take care of it.
