I giggle as I grab Sophia’s hand, fluttering my fingers at him. “See you soon.”
As I drag Sophia toward the building with the restroom sign, I can’t resist turning again and mouthing, “I can’t wait,” before I wink at him.
Sophia tugs on me, turning me to face the bathrooms. “Calm down, hormones on parade. The night is young, and so are we.”
I giggle. “You’re a walking cliché.” I suck in a deep breath, inhaling the fall scents deep into my lungs. I close my eyes briefly, relishing being young and insanely in love with an unhinged man who plans to chase me through a corn maze while wearing the Ghostface mask.
Opening my eyes, I squeeze Sophia’s hand. “I’m so happy.”
“I know. You’re glowing.” Pulling the door open, she pushes me inside. “Go use the potty.”
“Haha.” I roll my eyes as she slams the door. I lock it, preparing to do my business so I can return to my guy.
CHAPTER 62
Alexis
Istand outside the restroom, my back against the wall, checking my phone. I roll my eyes when I spot a text from my mom that says, “We need to talk.”
Whatever. It can wait.
A smile is on my face as I take in the people milling around the farm. Screams are coming from the haunted barn, and the tractor pulling the wagon over the grounds is filled to the brim.
Movement near the entrance of the corn maze draws my attention. A man wearing a Ghostface mask, a black hoodie, and jeans crooks a finger at me, beckoning me inside. Anticipation thrums through my body.
I text Sophia to let her know I’m going into the corn maze with Evan before hurrying off in his direction.
He waits until I get closer, then slips inside.
Oh, he wants to play, huh?
Following him inside, the lights from the barn and the pumpkin patch guide me. I ignore the twists and turns I’m making, knowing Evan can get us out of here after we have our fun.
Fear mixes with excitement as I continue moving forward, my gaze darting around. I can’t believe Evan hasn’t grabbed me by now.
Slowing my pace, I cautiously step into a narrower, darker section of the field, the sounds of the festival barely audible. The hair stands up on my arms. “E-Evan?”
“Over here.” His voice is a loud whisper, and I smile at him using that damn voice modulator again. He’s going all out tonight.
I hurry toward the voice, trying to be quiet so I can sneak up on him. “Boo,” I yell as I round the corner.
But there’s no one there.
My shoulders sag with disappointment.
Suddenly, strong arms grab me, spinning me around and tossing me over his shoulder. “Gotcha.”
I’m bouncing like a sack of potatoes as he hurries deeper into the maze, the darkness swallowing us up.
“Put me down, Evan.” I smack his back, laughing. “You’ve proved your point.”
He finally sets me on my feet in a dark, remote corner of the maze. A shiver of fear and anticipation zips through my spine.
My voice is a seductive purr as I twirl a lock of hair, pretending to be coy. “Now that you have me here, what will you do with me, Evan?”
He cocks his head, staring at me. He slowly reaches into his pocket, and when I spot the glint of silver in the darkness, terror courses through me.
My breath rasps from my lungs as I take one step back, then another. “E-Evan?”
