Matteo genuinely smiled. “I know you won’t.”

Anson gestured for us to follow him out of the room and we did. The moment the door was closed, Levin opened his mouth.

“What the fuck, Beyers?”

“Shh.” Anson continued to walk without looking at either of us. “Just fucking walk, Seeley. The walls have ears here.”

Levin snapped his mouth closed as we followed Anson outside to his souped-up, blacked-out Challenger and got inside, Levin in the front and me in the back.

Anson revved the engine before we shot out of the long driveway and onto the main road.

“You’re on your father’s side?” Levin demanded. “You’re betraying the horsemen and the kings—”

“I’m not betraying them,” Anson said firmly. “I’m an inside man just like you. Except I’m doing a better job at it than you are.”

“Fuck off. How do we know that?”

“That I’m doing the better job? Well, for one, I’m not openly pining for a girl and putting her in danger.”

“No, you’re just trying to sneak her from behind the horsemen’s backs,” Levin snapped back.

“Untrue. They know exactly where I stand on the subject of Rosalie. I’ve made no secrets about it. I am always honest. And I’m always loyal to those I love.”

“Rosalie,” I murmured.

Anson caught my eye in the rearview mirror.

“I’d die before I’d ever betray or hurt her,” he said softly. “She is my fucking life. Right now, everything I do is a stepping stone to something bigger. Something for her. If I betrayed the horsemen, I’d be betraying her. It’s never going to happen.” Anson looked to Levin. “Matteo may be my father, but Rosalie is my life. Big fucking difference. I’ve lived my life without my father, but I refuse to live without Rosalie. Do you understand?”

“You’re going to get yourself killed,” Levin muttered.

“I’d say everyone in this car is willing to die in the name of what they love, don’t you think?” Anson made a sharp right turn.

“I am,” I said.

“Me too.” Levin let out a sigh. “So where are we going?”

“To the Underground. We need to pay Everett Church a visit.”

Levin looked back at me, a grim expression on his face.

It looked like this day was going to be a fucking nightmare.

CHAPTER 34

Dominic

Bianca lookedstunning in her emerald green Bolten robes with the gold honor cords hanging around her shoulders. Despite everything, she’d done it.

“You look stunning,” I said, kissing her soft lips.

She smiled against the kiss, her hands on my chest.

“You don’t look too bad either, Mr. Head of the Class.”

I winked at her. I’d graduated top of the class, but in all fairness, it was probably more the fear of Matteo coming in here and shutting everything down than my actual effort that got me the position. While I did have the four-oh GPA, even despite all the shit I went through, it certainly didn’t feel earned. Bianca was just a few places behind me in class rankings. She’d worked her ass off for it. I’d skated through it based on my name. That’s what I told myself, anyway.

I’d written my speech the night before while watching Bianca sleep. All I wanted to do in this world was protect her, but everything just seemed to be crashing down on me as of late. I wasn’t sure how we were going to get through this. The horsemen had been in contact and had let me know they hadn’t heard anything one way or another. It was just as well though. No news meant good news. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself.
