“Sorry,” he apologized. “I don’t think she should be standing anymore.”
“It’s fine,” I murmured as Lana giggled and gazed up at the stars.
“Where’s Logan?” Ryan peered around, his brows crinkled.
“I don’t know. He left an hour ago to go check out a truck with Dax and Jason and hasn’t come back.”
“Weird,” Ryan muttered, slipping his phone out.
I saw Logan’s name on the screen as he shot him a quickwhere are youmessage. “Maybe they went for a ride,” he offered.
“Maybe,” I said, swallowing hard as I watched Dax and Jason stroll out of the house with a beer in their hands, laughing.
Logan wasn’t with them.
“There he is,” Ryan said.
I focused on where he was pointing. Logan was rushing toward us, appearing as if he was going to throw up.
The moment he got to me, he gripped my hand and tugged me forward.
“Let’s go, Gracie,” he sounded breathless. His eyes were wild as his gaze darted around.
“What’s wrong?” I asked, glancing back to Lana, who was nearly falling off the lounger. I slipped my hand from Logan’s and moved back to Lana, not wanting to leave her in that state.
“Grace. Seriously. We need to leave,” Logan said, moving to grab me again.
I pushed his hand away as Ryan helped me get Lana back in the seat.
“What’s your problem?” I demanded when he tried to tug me again.
“Please, let’s just go, OK?”
“Where were you? You’ve been gone for nearly an hour—”
“That’s what I need to talk to you about. Just. . .pleasecome with me. We can go back to that spot in the woods and talk. Or back to my place. My parents went out to dinner with the Davies from down the street. I’m sure they’re not even home yet.”
He tried once more to take my hand, but I frowned at him. Something wasn’t right.
“Hey, man,” Andy called out, approaching with Marissa on his arm.
I’d never really spoken to her before. She was quiet and always wore black. People said she practiced witchcraft behind the science building. But looking at her now, she didn’t look as scary as everyone said. The fact she and Andy were dating was still confusing to me. They were polar opposites, but I supposed so were me and Logan.
Logan ignored Andy and gave me a desperate look. I could tell he was a little wasted by the way his words slurred slightly and how red his eyes were.
“Have you guys met Marissa?” Andy continued.
“Yeah. Hey, Marissa,” Ryan said, standing up after draping his jacket over a now sleeping Lana. “How’s it going?”
“Hi,” she answered softly.
“Marissa, this is Logan and Ryan. The passed-out girl is Ryan’s girlfriend, Lana. And this here is Grace, Logan’s girlfriend.” Andy tipped his beer to his lips, his eyes on me.
I cleared my throat and pulled my hand away from Logan’s to shake her hand.
“Hi. Nice to meet you,” I said, offering her a quick smile.
“You too,” she said, her gaze darting from me to a very jittery Logan.
