“How about tomorrow night—”
“Uh, sure. We can do that, I guess.”
“Don’t sound so excited,” he joked.
“Sorry. You just unnerve me.” I stared down at my hands knotted in my lap. I had no idea why he wanted to hang out with me. Sure, he kept telling me he wanted a change, to get to know someone new, but it just didn’t make any sense to me.
“I don’t mean to,” he replied, his voice laced with honesty, his blue eyes sincere.
“I don’t think youmeanto do a lot of things, Logan, but you do,” I replied, peering at him intently. “So let’s go out tomorrow and see how it goes. If you truly do suck, we don’t have to be friends.”
“Lady’s choice,” he smiled.
“Well, I’ll talk to you tomorrow then.” I opened the door and climbed out.
I was surprised to find him behind me as I walked to the porch. “What are you doing?” I asked, turning around as I reached my door.
“Escorting you to your door.” He looked miffed I’d asked.
“Why?”
“Uh, well, Grace, I don’t know what sort of company you usually keep, but in my world, a guy walks a girl to her door and sees her safely inside, even if they are just friends. It’s how it should be done.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah. Oh.” He smirked down at me. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”
“Can’t wait,” I managed as he backed away from me, all muscles and a sweet smile.
Stunned, I stepped in the house, closing the door firmly behind me. Once I got to my bedroom, I undressed, washed up, and climbed into bed. My phone dinged just as I was snuggling down.
Sweet dreams, Gracie.
I bit my lip at Logan’s message, wondering if I should reply. Before I could talk myself out of it, I typed out a message and hit send.
Sweet dreams to you too, Logan.
CHAPTER14
Logan
Ismiled down at the text. I was finally making headway with Grace. It was a relief. For a minute there, I thought I might as well throw in the towel.
This was supposed to be just a game, but I couldn’t shake her out of my head. I wasn’t supposed to get involved or invested. As I lay in bed, I couldn’t sleep as she danced behind my eyes, all dark, wild hair, and smiles. Rolling over and punching my pillow, I let out a growl and grabbed my phone, going up on my elbows to type.
My fingers hovered over the screen for a moment before I typed the message.
Me: I can’t sleep. Are you awake?
I hit send and waited, holding my breath. A moment later, my phone dinged, making my heart thud faster in my chest.
Grace: Yeah. I can’t sleep either.
Me: Anything on your mind?
I waited, hoping she’d say me.
Grace: Not really. You?
