“Shut up.”

“Sorry, is that a sensitive subject?”

“No. I’m tired of listening to you talk.” The guy was getting agitated but kept his distance.

“You gonna tie me up?”

“And how would I do that without you trying to assault me?”

“Fair enough. So…how long do we have to wait? Is Lansky going to be long?”

“He’ll be as long as he needs to be.”

“Okay…what’s your name?”

“Why should I tell you?”

“Why not? You afraid I’ll steal your identity or something? I just want to know what to call you.”

“You can call me Blaze if you need to call me somethin’.”

“Nice. So, Blaze, you want to play Uno or something while we wait?”

“No.”

“What about I Spy?”

Blaze ignored his question and perched himself on the edge of a table. He looked out the window, watching for Lansky’s return.

Tom caught Isla’s movement in the corner of his eye. If she was going to make a move, they’d only have one shot at this. It would take everything she had.

He had to keep talking to Blaze just enough to make him want to continue to ignore his captive.

“My little sister loved playing I Spy when we’d take road trips. We used to have this rule that you couldn’t choose anything inside the car, but she always would.”

Isla crawled across the floor to get into position behind Blaze.

“It didn’t take long before I was always able to guess correctly on the first or second try because her choices were so limited. She’d get mad at me and hit me so I’d hit her back, then get in trouble.”

A crash had Blaze whirling around. Isla had passed out and dragged an empty bucket to the floor with her.

“I should shoot you both now.”

“She’s too feeble to do you any damage. She was probably confused.”

“Oh, yeah? You weren’t interested in bringing it to my attention?”

“Who am I interfere. Can I carry her back over there? She’s obviously no danger to anyone but herself.”

“No. You can leave her where she is. I can keep a better eye on the two of you that way. Lansky’s not going to be happy.”

There were no more options open to them. Unless Blaze made a mistake, they were as good as dead.

God, it’s up to you. Whatever happens from here on out, we are completely at your mercy.

Chapter25

Sara watched through the window, relieved that Isla and Tom were still alive, but she’d watched Isla attempted to sneak up on their captor. Now she was in a worse state than before. She’d promised Tom she wouldn’t put herself in danger, but their lives weren’t at stake then. If Sara didn’t act, he and Isla would both die, and she wouldn’t sit idly by, watching two more people she cared about be murdered by Lansky. She wasn’t the same scared girl stuck on a couch anymore. This time, she’d fight back.
