“As in—right this second?”
“That is what ‘immediately’ means.”
“It’s that time sensitive?”
“That is my understanding, yes.”
“Well, if he’s that desperate to have a chat, I will comply. However, I’m capable of driving myself.”
“He made it very clear that I am to escort you in my vehicle.”
“Am I under arrest?”
“No, sir.”
Tom rested his elbow on the window frame. If he went to the station, it was likely he’d never come back out again. But the street was too crowded to subdue the deputy here without drawing unwanted attention.
“Agent Bennett, we really need to get going.”
“All right, let me pull off the road a bit farther.”
“Thanks for your cooperation.”
When the deputy headed back to his car, Tom floored it, weaving between vehicles as he raced for the corner.
The traffic moved too slowly to escape this way. After jumping the sidewalk, he made another turn, then another before he stopped at the edge of a parking lot where he took off on foot, sprinting between two buildings. At the end of the alley, he scaled a high fence, noting the sound of sirens as he landed on his feet and entered a small shop.
The man behind the counter straightened. “Can I help you with anything today?” He sounded bored.
“Nope.” Tom pulled out his badge, flicking it only long enough to show that it looked official. “Building inspector. I’ve had some reports.”
The man stiffened. “What kind of reports?”
“Rats. That sort of thing.”
“I don’t have any rats in here.”
“I hope not. I’ll have to have a quick look around, then I’ll leave you alone. I’m sure it’s nothing, but we’re obligated to check.”
“Who told you I’ve got rats?”
“I’m sorry. I’m not at liberty to divulge that information. It’s important that we retain strict anonymity of our clients. Otherwise, people would be too fearful to say anything. You understand.”
“How do you know it’s not a hoax?”
“I’ll know when I don’t find any sign of rats. I’ll duck in the back and be on my way.”
The owner followed him to a narrow back room.
“Is this it?” Tom said, noting the back door.
“Pretty much.”
“Looks good to me. Where does this back door lead?”
“To a side street. Why? What does that have to do with rats?”
“They could be congregating out there.” He opened the door. “I’ll have a quick look, then head off.”
