“And since when have you thought following your boss’s orders was the best move?”
“I always follow his orders when I agree with them. And Dodd may know more. He may have heard rumblings about activity picking up. It’s worth speaking to him. Besides, I could use his resources if the FBI isn’t ready to get on board with the investigation.”
“Why didn’t you mention this earlier? We could have visited him already.”
“I was planning on speaking to him once you were safely on a bus.”
“But I’m the one who can identify them.”
“I don’t need you to identify them. I only needed to tell Dodd that they’ve been identified. I wanted to keep you out of it, but if you need something to preoccupy you, I’d say the sheriff’s office is the safest place on the island where we can move forward with this case.”
“Let’s go then.” She tossed the blanket on the arm of the chair and walked toward the door.
“You want to go right this second?”
“Why not? It’s freezing in here, and we don’t know Balthazar's next move. We don’t have any time to waste.”
“Idon’t have any time to waste.”
“We. I’m leaving on a bus soon, remember? Let me do this one thing, and I promise I’ll go willingly when the time comes.”
“I’ll hold you to that promise.”
“I know you will.” Although she wished he wanted her to stay. “Let’s go.”
Chapter15
After Tom flashedhis badge in the reception area, he and Sara were escorted to an interrogation room where they waited.
“If I didn’t know better, I’d say we’re being arrested,” she said, looking around at their new surroundings.
“Maybe the conference rooms were full.”
“They should have put us in a cell. At least there we would have had a bench to lie down on.”
“You can sit.”
“Makes me feel like a criminal.”
“Law enforcement agencies react differently when the FBI turns up. He could be throwing his weight around to make sure I haven’t forgotten whose turf I’m on.”
“Is his reaction warranted? Do you turn up and take over?”
“We try not to. But our training is different, and sometimes that means we do things differently.”
“And they have to shut up and take it?”
“That depends on why we’re there.”
“Sounds like you’re all making things more complicated than it has to be.”
Tom shrugged. “It’s how the world works.”
She paced the room, stopping in front of the mirror where she tried to see through. “I’ve never been on this side of one of these before. They really do work well.”
“They’re supposed to.”
“Do you think someone is back there?”
