I shrug. “I was going to give it another shot.” Especially the way it felt to wrap my arms around his waist and hold on tight. And let’s not forget that one time when we were at a stoplight and he placed his hand on my bare thigh, letting those long fingers tease the sensitive skin on my leg.
He opens the door for me. “I think you’ll be happy once you’re inside.”
He’s right. My eyes light at the sight of my favorite trail mix. It’s packed in a small pink zipper pouch. One of those reusable ones that Sophie uses for her girls. It’s a snack for a toddler and I love it.
“Dinner’s not until later, so I figured you needed a snack.”
“Thank you. I am famished.”
I unzip it and start snacking.
“Why was Sebastian giving you a massage?” he asks.
“I’ve been really sore lately, a new cross-training program plus rehearsing for the showcase has made it harder for me to recover.”
He nods, watching me devour the trail mix.
I’m a few bites in when I notice something. “This tastes different.”
“Different how?” Rhys asks, lips twitching.
“The candy pieces are…better. Are these,” I examine a candy-coated peanut butter piece, “real Reese’s Pieces?”
“Maybe.”
“And there aren’t any raisins. Did you pick them out?” I ask.
He shrugs. “I made it.”
“You made it?” I repeat, not fully understanding. “Like you bought all the ingredients and put it together?”
“Yeah.” He nods.
“For me?” It’s obvious, yet I’m still in shock.
It’s a small thing, but I’m realizing that’s the part of fake-dating Rhys I’m starting to enjoy the most. The little things he does. Picking me up from practice, planning dates that work around my schedule, and now, this sexy man in his designer suit is making me custom trail mix so I don’t get hangry after a long day of practice.
The Reese’s Pieces are delicious. They probably have more sugar in them than I want to think about but with the grueling workouts I’ve been putting myself through, I’m going to enjoy them.
I pick out a few candy pieces and toss them in my mouth.
Rhys grins down at me. “I knew you only liked the trail mix for the candy pieces.”
“That’s not true. I like the nuts, too.”
I pop an almond in my mouth to prove it.
“Sure.” Rhys presses a kiss to my head while I suck down some water to help the dry almond make its way down my throat.
“You’re the best fake boyfriend in the entire world.”
CHAPTER 19
Rhys
Beside me, Lettie’s happily munching on the trail mix I made her. I should be satisfied that she’s happy but right now, I’m losing my mind.
That kiss. It did something to me.
