I nodded my affirmation then exited the vehicle, closing the door behind me. He pulled off before I’d even stepped foot into the establishment. What a gentleman. I got checked in and headed to my room, excited for a drink after a long and terrifying ordeal.
I guess I was going to find Roman Petrov, and eat him for dinner.Soon.
CHAPTER SIX
Roman
“Roman, stay close to me,” Alexie commanded.
Our mission was to find Tiffany, who had disappeared without a trace again. The culprit was unknown, but it was clear that Viktor was deeply affected by her absence. Alexie had volunteered us to assist in the rescue effort. I nodded in understanding, careful not to make any noise that could reveal our location. The consequences of being discovered could be fatal.
This was my first real mission after Sloane coddled me to death when we stormed the MC. Alexie trained me, so there was no way I could get hurt. I’d learned from the best. He made sure I went on outings that involved breaking kneecaps, but in no way put me in danger.
I didn’t respect that.
I’ve spent almost all my life living in danger. Why change what I was used to now?
“Let’s move.” Alexie and the men, along with myself, followed as we stormed inside.
I’d gotten intel that Tiffany was located here, but we didn’t see her.
“Go around back, Roman,” Alexie ordered.
I withdrew my gun and put my knife away. When I scanned the perimeter, I didn’t see anyone in the vicinity. The night was silent. I doubled back, making sure we were alone. Since I didn’t see anyone, I made my way back to the building.
Before I hit the back door, I saw a flash in my peripheral. It looked like a guy trying to sneak across the back of the warehouse. I heard a sound, but saw no shadow as he merged with the dark.
Maybe it was Alexie coming to check on me. I pointed my gun in that direction anyway.
Before I could make a move, coldness touched my throat.
“Fucking Russian fuck. Of course, he would have a kid working for him,” someone muttered in a thick Italian accent.
I tried to peer backward, but he forced my neck straight. “Sorry to do this to you, kid, but you chose the wrong people to align with.” His hot breath reached the back of my neck.
Before I could swing my gun around and attack, he slid the knife across my throat. Instead of falling forward, I stumbled a few steps and spun around, falling on my ass as I did so.
I raised my hand to my throat, trying to staunch the blood coming out. The world was getting fuzzier by the second, and my head was like a huge, heavy watermelon.
I blinked, catching his back as he walked away. A blur moved and tackled him onto the ground. I heard screaming, squelching, and grunting, but I was looking up at the sky. The world was spinning. I blinked, and the stars were disappearing.
I tried to clear my vision to get the stars back. Warmth spread out over my numb throat. Then a chill tore into me. I shivered, coldness setting in.
I blinked again, my vision dimming.
Fucking asshole was getting away. I tried to get an identifier so we could kill the motherfucker, but my eyesight was almost gone.
I failed.
Shit.
“... it’s more than he can handle.”
“... boy is promising.”
“... fool.”
Voices rose to new heights as awareness came back to me. The dream I tried so hard to hold onto floated away. I had to tell someone something, but there was a problem. I couldn’t remember last night. Did I drink that much vodka? Shame welled inside of me. After all of Alexie’s intensive training on holding my liquor since I was small, a few drops of Italian vodka had knocked me on my ass.
