Yvette had stayed behind with three gendarmes, but, suddenly, that wasn’t enough.

Alex pulled on his coat.

“Where are you going?” Ry asked.

“To find Yvette.”

Hugo nodded. “We just spoke to Ramirez. He and his colleagues spoke with everyone in the office and then sent them home. Yvette is the only one still there.”

Every instinct told him to call Yvette and warn her. But he didn’t want to scare her. And he really didn’t want her doing anything stupid. Ramirez was a good man. Yvette would be safe with him until Alex arrived.

Alex forced himself to breathe.

“Please ask him to stay with her until I get there,” he asked, wondering if he was the only one who could hear his voice shaking.

Ry was already on the phone.

Alex turned to look at Hugo, his hand already on the door. “I’m going to need a copy of that, Hugo. Can you email it to me?”

“Sure thing.”

“Hold on,” Tristan said. Alex didn’t miss the look his friends had exchanged. “I’m off duty already. I’ll drive you.”

In the end, Alex was grateful for Tristan’s help, since there was no space to park anywhere near the town hall.

“Wait for me here. I’ll find Yvette and bring her down.”

Tristan nodded unhappily. It was clear he’d been hoping they’d stick together.

“Hurry up, or I’ll come in for you.”

Alex rushed up the stairs to the first floor. He was so angry, he couldn’t see straight.

At Yvette’s office suite, Ramirez met him by the door. “Alex.”

Alex tipped his chin. “Ramirez.”

“What’s going on, Alex?”

Alex thanked Ramirez and dismissed him. He didn’t need an audience for what he was about to share with her.

“It’s not safe for you to go home alone,” Alex said.

“But I always go home alone.”

Alex breathed in a shaky breath.

“Not after a bomb scare.”

Yvette looked at him, her chin set. “It wasn’t a real bomb.”

“It could have been,” Alex said. “Listen, Yvette …”

“I don’t have any enemies,” she insisted, sounding tired. “I told the gendarmes already. I swear I’m not lying, Alex.”

God, her heart was going to break when she found out.

“Listen, Yvette,” he began again.
