A plan that almost ended up killing Yvette.
Alex wondered how someone could lose touch with reality so badly, to think that any amount of money could be worth a human life. He sighed.
Shortly afterwards, Yvette came to him. Alex knew she wasn’t big on public displays of affection, so it thrilled him when she went up on tiptoes and kissed him.
He grabbed her and held her tight. He wasn’t going to let her go.
“So. What did you think?” she asked, smiling widely.
“I think you were amazing.”
She laughed. “I’m not the one running for re-election. How did you see Pierre?”
Alex shrugged. “He did okay. But half the people voting for him will really be voting for you, and you know it.”
“I’m not sure you’re the most objective person,” she said.
“Maybe not. But people know you get things done. They know you cannot be bought, and they know you have the town’s best interests at heart, always. I can’t think of many people who bring all those qualities together.”
“I’m not a politician, Alex.”
“I wish I could take you home right now and show you just how wonderful you are, Yvette,” Alex said. “Unfortunately, I’m working the night-shift tonight.”
Yvette smiled coyly. “I’m having dinner with the team, but come home when you’re done, even if it’s early morning. So I can show you how much I missed you all night.”
Alex felt his cock harden. He hoped it wasn’t too noticeable.
“Are you free this weekend?” he asked. They were still coming to terms with each other’s schedule.
Yvette nodded. “I think so. Why?”
“I want to go away with you.”
“Okay … Where do you want to go?”
“To Lyon.”
Her eyebrows went up in surprise. “To Lyon?”
“I want to meet your mother.”
Now her jaw fell open. She was so easy to read. He wondered how he could ever have thought her cold and businesslike. Alex squeezed her hand, nodding. “I have something important to tell her.”
“My mother?”
“I need to tell her I’m in love with her daughter.”
EPILOGUE
* * *
Yvette
Yvette’s gaze met her sister’s as they sat on opposite sides of their mother’s living room.
Between them, Alex rolled on the rug beneath her nephews.
Cute.
