“Huh,” I tossed the invitation back at him. “I don’t want to.”

“Come on, dude. Don’t make me invite my secretary.” He looked over my shoulder to make sure no one was listening. “Two drinks and he’s sloppy as fuck.”

I leaned back in the chair, folding my arms over my chest. “I have big plans for this weekend. I still don’t want to.”

Milton scoffed. “You told me at lunch you were just spending the weekend with your girl. Get out of the sack for a night and let her dress up. Women like feeling like a princess every once in a while.”

I smirked. “I always make my girl feel like a princess.”

“Bull shit,” he snorted. “Come on. She used to go to these things all the time. She will love it.”

That didn’t make me happy to hear. Not at all. I could imagine Lynn now, dressed to the nines and hanging on the arm of her asshole ex. He would have been the envy of every man there.

I hate that. She’s mine.

“Look at you.” Milton wiggled in his seat. “Getting jealous there, Trude?”

“Fuck you.”

He laughed, pushing the invitation back towards me. “You’re coming. You know you are. Stake your claim in front of everyone like you want. You can piss all over her heels, so no other men come sniffing. Doesn’t that sound nice?”

It sounded nice. Ever since my mom mentioned marriage, all I have been thinking about is staking my claim publicly on my girl. I was growing more and more sure by the day that she was my future.

“I’ll think about it,” I muttered, picking up the invitation.

“There we go,” he grinned. “I’ll put you both on the guest list.”

“I have to ask her first.”

“She’ll say yes.” Milton waved his hand.

I was about to come back with some smartass retort when an unpleasant thought popped into my head. “Hey, is her ex-husband going to be there?”

Milton looked uncomfortable for a second, then shrugged. “Would it be bad if he was? Wouldn’t that be more of a reason to show up with her beside you?”

It did sound tempting. I could rub his nose in my happiness. Happiness he threw away for some snake.

“Fine,” I groaned. “I’m going home,” I pushed myself up from his chair.

“Home? You mean your girlfriend’s house?”

“I meant home.” Lynn was my home. Even if I don’t live with her yet, I’ve already decided she was my home. My future.

“Don’t forget to ask yourgirlfriend,” Milton told me teasingly as I left his office. “Piss on her heels all night long!” He yelled as I walked down the hall.

The receptionist looked at me oddly, but then went back to typing as I got on the elevator.

The entire drive home, I thought about how tomorrow would go if her ex was there. I want to show her off and make her feel like my queen, but I’m not sure how she will take it seeing her ex there.

I called her instead of worrying over it. If she said no now, I could call Milton and let him know she was uncomfortable with it before he solidified any more plans that included the two of us.

“Hello?” Her sweet voice carried through the car speakers, making me smile.

“Hey, beautiful. What are you doing?”

Her little sigh had me pushing the accelerator to get to her faster. “Trying on clothes my sister gave me.”

The brief anxiety I felt from hearing her sigh disappeared. She sighed a lot when her sister talked her into something she was unsure of. I laughed gently, wondering what clothes her sister could have given her.
