“Feeling what?” He asked

Harlem thought about her most recent run-ins with Elaina. She wasn’t sure if there was anything to be concerned about, if she was just over-reacting, or worse–jealous. Therefore, Harlem decided to keep that part to herself. “I don’t know. It’s almost as if we don’t deserve to be happy together.”My overactive imagination has also been getting the best of me.Harlem had to release that energy. “These last few days have shown me how important you are to me. As far as Elaina, I won’t get it right every time, but I will try.”

“That’s all any of us can do, right?”

Harlem stood in front of Carter. Slowly, she brought her face to his and cradled his head in her hands. Gently, she pressed her lips against his. He wasted no time taking over.

Nate chose that moment to walk back into his office. He figured he’d given them enough time to either kill each other or make-up. Nate hoped it was the latter. As soon as he opened the door, he got his answer. They hadn’t even realized he was in the room. After a minute, Nate cleared his throat.

Carter and Harlem found it within themselves to break apart.

Nate fought back a grin. “I take it, you two came to an agreement?”

Shyly, Harlem smiled and then wrapped her arms around Carter’s middle.

Carter held her tight.

“Good, then get out of my office,” Nate said jokingly. “I have important stuff to do and clients coming in about half an hour.”

“Wait, was there really any paperwork I needed to sign?” Harlem asked. She didn’t think so but wanted to be sure.

Nate turned red. “I um . . . it’s fine. I made a mistake. You don’t need to sign anything.”

Carter leveled him with a conspiratorial gaze. “I’m assuming you don’t need to get my permission for a trade either?”

“Okay, damn!” Nate surrendered. “Neither one of you needed to sign anything. You just needed to be in the same room to sort things out. Melody and I decided to give you a reason to be in the same room. Clearly, you have.” Nate grinned. “Now, get out.”

Carter returned his smile. “I have no problem with that. As a matter of fact, I’m in the mood for pancakes.” He turned to Harlem. “Benny’s?”

The corner of her lip curved upward in a little coy smile. She had a different idea. As they left Nate’s office and walked toward the elevator, Harlem figured she would make a request. “Carter?”

He glanced down at her as he pressed the down button. “Hmm?”

“I make great pancakes. I think they might even be better than Benny’s. How about we go to your place, and I prove it.”

Carter didn’t miss the innuendo. He was not going to pass up an invitation like that.

Chapter 12

They walked into his kitchen arm-in-arm. Carter leaned in and captured Harlem’s mouth in a soul-stirring kiss. Immediately, her body responded.

“I missed you.” Carter said as he pulled her closer.

“I missed you more.” Harlem’s eyes couldn’t seem to leave his.

“If we are going to have pancakes, we better get that going.”Before I carry you to the nearest flat surface.Carter tried to pull away. She was pregnant and most likely starving, but Harlem wouldn’t let him go.

“I always thought they were best served during lunch,” Harlem played with a strand of hair that had come undone from her ponytail.

Her words were all it took. Carter grabbed Harlem by the waist, pressed her back against the countertop, and pressed his lips firmly against hers.

After Carter ended the kiss, he spoke more to himself than to Harlem. “Do you know how beautiful you are?” Carter held her gaze. She really was amazing. It was incredible how her body was changing, yet it just enhanced everything that was already beautiful about her.

The way Carter looked at Harlem made her feel like the sexiest woman in the world. It had only been a few days since they had so-called broken up, but any time apart felt like a lifetime.

Harlem’s eyes were filled with passion.

Carter kissed her, then moved lower to and placed gentle kisses against her stomach. As he made his way back up her body, Carter pressed his lips against hers again. He couldn’t seem to get enough of kissing her.
