He rubbed his hands across his face.
He didn't know how to explain something that was natural to him. It wasn't that Kalisandre would be tethered to him, but rather that their souls connected on a deeper level. The connection was said to fill a void that lived within.
"When were you going to tell me, Graeson?" Kalisandre asked when he still hadn't formulated a response.
He dug his fingers into his hair, tugging on the strands.
"When it was the right time," he muttered.
She scoffed and threw up her hands. "When is any time the right time? You know what? I can't deal with this right now." Kalisandre spun and without looking back, she spat, "And do not even think about following me."
Graeson jolted to a stop as he made to take a step forward. He stared at her, unsure what to do, as she disappeared down the hall.
A hand landed on his shoulder. "I'll see if I can talk to her," Terin murmured.
Graeson's relationship with Kalisandre was not something Terin could solve. However, before Graeson could argue with him, the prince was already jogging after her.
Chapter 47
MYRA
Myra paced backand forth in the cell, her heart pounding and palms slick with sweat. Soon, her steps would likely form grooves along the ground as her anxiety rose if she had to wait much longer.
Laurince had said he would see what he could do, but what if he was pulled away? What if he was discovered?
With each passing minute, another worry surfaced. Unable to take it anymore, she pressed her back against the wall and slid down to the floor.
She could only hope that time and the gods were on her side for once.
Chapter 48
KALLIE
"There isnothing for you to explain, Terin! I do not wish to speak about this," Kallie snapped, pacing inside her room.
Despite her attempts to ignore him, Terin had followed her, pushing past her before she could lock him out.
"By the gods, you are more like Graeson than you even realize. Neither of you ever wish to speak about your problems. But have you ever thought that maybe if you did, you would have less of them?" he retorted, his frustration evident in the way he repeatedly ran his hands through his hair.
Kallie stared at Terin, her mouth agape. She snapped her mouth shut. "When will we return?" she gritted.
Terin blinked.
"To Pontia," Kallie clarified.
His hands fell to his sides. "I...I do not know. I am sure we will need to return sooner rather than later."
Kallie nodded, her mind reeling as she thought of coming face-to-face with Esmeray again. But Kallie could only deal with one thing at a time.
"And we are just going to let Domitius carry on?" Kallie asked.
"What choice do we have? Our mother is still queen. If she demands our return, who are we to refuse her?"
Kallie scoffed and spun away from him.
"Kallie," he beckoned, but she did not turn around. "Everything will be all right."
It was the biggest lie she had heard all day. Nothing was all right, and she felt helpless to do anything to fix it.
