Chapter One
Excommunication
Priest
Inever thought this dumb ass plan to get Fem back would work out for me. When Hawk suggested I needed to do something big, something that took me out of my comfort zone to win her back, I immediately thought of“10 Things I Hate About You”and the conversation Fem and I had that one night.
She told me until I loved someone so much that I would embarrass myself for them, I would never understand the movie. Well, I fucking understood it now.Which is why I’m at her home begging her to take me back.
Since the day Fem kicked me out of her hospital room, I haven’t been able to function. It became blatantly clear how much I loved her. The only thing worse than being told to stay away from her was watching her bleed out in my arms, thinking she was going to die.
To have her back in my arms now is the greatest feeling ever. I love this woman wholeheartedly.
Suddenly, the chiming of ringtones has me pulling away from Fem. I take my phone out of my pocket reading the message scrolled across the screen.
My heart races, causing pains in my chest. My palms immediately start to sweat. I glance up at the boys, and they all have the same ashen look on their faces.
“What is it?” Fem asks.
Standing up straight, I look at Lucien before answering. “We have an excommunication order out on us.”
“What?” she gasps, shooting to her feet, but immediately sitting back down. Reminding me she needs to take it easy. Although her injuries have healed, she still hasn’t fully recovered.
“What does that mean?” Brooklyn asks.
“It means the entire Church is coming after us,” Lucien says. He grabs Malia around her waist and pulls her into him.
I know what he’s thinking. He’s afraid. He’s not alone in his fear. As I look around the room, I realize we all have something special here. Something that we are now realizing we could be taken away from. The domesticated life has never enticed me. I’m a killer and I will always be one, but I won’t lie as if the thought of coming home to Fem and Charlie every night did not appeal to me. However, with this new information, that may not be a possibility.
“And they have orders to kill us on sight,” Lucien finishes, placing a kiss on Malia’s head.
“That doesn’t make sense,” Hawk argues. “They haven’t chosen a new Pope. The Council doesn’t have the power to make that decision without a Pope.”
He isn’t lying. Only a Pope can make that type of call. Yes, the council must agree, but the official notice has to come from the Pope. We are still two weeks out from the ordination of a new Pope.
“What if there is someone else?” Fem asks. “Someone higher than the Pope.”
We all turned to look at her. My brows pinch as I think over her words.
“Who is higher than the Pope?” Many asks the question I’m sure all of us are wondering.
She hesitates for a second. “God. And I think we’re going to need Beast.”
She’s right. Not only would I need all my sons back home where we could work together and remain safe, I knew there was one more person I was going to have to contact. I guess it’s time I cash in one of those favors he owes me.
As soon as I lift my phone back up to make the call, the device lights up in my hand. An unknown number comes across the screen. It’s a New York area code, so I don’t hesitate to answer.
“This is Priest,” I say, as soon as I answer the phone.
“Hello, my name is Gabriel August Jones.” The little voice on the other end of the phone recites as if they’ve practiced this phone call before. “I live at…”
“Wait,” I say, shaking my head. “Who is this?”
“Put it on speaker,” Lucien advises.
I quickly click the call over to speaker phone.
“My name is Gabriel August Jones. My mommy said to call this number in case of an emergency. Hulk is bleeding and mommy is on the floor.”
