“I'm sure you'll change your mind.” Juliana pulled her phone out of her pocket. “You and Dewey are great together. You are obviously attracted to each other since you slept with him.” She winked. “Again.”
“And nothing says you have to get married right now.” Becky stepped around the counter and sat down on the other side of Eliza. “But you shouldn't shut yourself off.”
They didn't get it.
Neither of them had any trouble falling in love.
She stood up to leave. Better to exit the room than to get into an argument. “I'm supposed to meet with Addie soon. She found some photo software for me and is going to show me how to use it.”
After a quick goodbye, Eliza left the diner. She'd meant to eat dinner there before heading back to her empty house. Just as well. She could save money and eat a bowl of cereal. One step closer to saving enough money to buy the house.
Cameron waved from across the street. Maybe a guy could give her a different opinion about Dewey. He might understand better than Juliana and Becky. Especially since Cameron had his own history with bad relationships.
“Hey, Cam.” Eliza slipped an arm around his waist for a side hug. “What's put that extra grumpy look on your face this evening?”
He took a deep breath, releasing her. His eyes were drawn tight as he surveyed the street a moment before landing back on her. “I casually asked Addie where she wanted to go on our honeymoon.” His mouth flattened into a thin line. “Didn't realize how expensive some of these trips can be.”
“Like where?”
“My instructions were 'some remote island somewhere.' What the hell do I do with that? I mean, we can take a jon boat out to Turtle Island over in a lake in Alabama and camp. That's remote. And free.”
Eliza bit her lip. Poor Cameron. “I don't think that's what she meant.”
“I damn well know it's not, but that's about all I can afford without feeling it pinch the budget for the next three years.” He crossed his arms. “I tried to tell her that the same water that floats around some island in the Caribbean is the same water you stick your toes in down in Panama City.”
“How did that go over?”
He rolled his eyes and sighed.
“Didn't think she'd go for it.”
“The worst part is that she could afford the entire thing if I let her pay for it.” Cameron slipped his phone back in his pocket. “I’ll figure it out. What about you?”
“What about me?”
He set his hands on his hips, eyes narrowing. Into slits.
“Stop it,” she said, glowering right back at him.
“Stop what?”
“Looking at me like you're gearing up for an interrogation.” She crossed her arms. “I thought we were talking about you taking a second mortgage on the house to give Addie the honeymoon of her dreams.”
“We were until I realized that you're upset about something.”
Was she that easy to read? Maybe to the few people that knew her since she was born. She'd come into town, hoping to find a distraction.
“I'm not upset.”
“Are you worried about Carrie staying with Dewey? I can tell you that he has talked about it non-stop. He actually has food in his fridge now, along with what Ms. Clara took over there earlier.”
Her phone chimed.
Hot dogs on our “camping” trip.
A picture appeared of Carrie, the corners of her mouth smeared with ketchup, chomping into a hot dog.
Cameron leaned over her shoulder. “Oh, I see they eat the same as well.”
