I tilt the knife so it catches the light. “Was it worth the money?”
“No,” he croaks.
“Ready to talk?”
His leg is shaking so hard, I have to shove his foot to the floor.
“You got three seconds. Three. Two. One?—
“Okay! Fuck. Okay.”
I stand up and shift the knife to his throat. “Who hired you?”
“M-m-man, it’s going to break your girl’s heart.”
Scout glances at me, I feel his concerned gaze on the side of my face.
I fist the son of a bitch’s hair and drag his head back until he gasps in pain. “How do you know Marianna?”
“I dated her in high school.”
Black flames lick at my vision. A tremor fueled by fury makes the knife shake against his neck. “You motherfucker…”
Scout wraps his hand around my wrist, stopping me from making a bloody mess. “Let go, man.”
Justice is on me too, pulling me back. “Don’t kill him. You need him to talk.”
Goddamnit.
Fury flames through my veins, making me roar. “Is that how you got the key?”
“N-no. She never gave me a key.Hegave me the key.”
This asshole’s going to be lucky if he gets to breathe out of a tube for the rest of his life. “Who?!”
When he doesn’t reply, Scout lifts his ass off the chair by his hair. “You’re running out of time. If you don’t talk, I’m going to let him cut your legs apart.”
“Fuck,” the guy wheezes. “You better be ready to deal with the aftermath because this is going to destroy Marianna.”
Chapter Fifty-Two
I’m standing in the kitchen when Evan’s voice comes from the guest room in a frightening bellow. “You motherfucker!”
By the time my brain has registered the words, I’m swept off my feet and carried outside.
“Vik!” I squirm in his arms. “Put me down.”
He stalks across the driveway and far into the field before he drops me on my feet.
“You don’t need to hear that.”
He’s right. I’m shaking and more than a little queasy. “Is he going to kill him?”
“Man in love is hard to control.”
I push out of his arms. “What about a woman in love?”
He scowls as he crosses his arms. “Fuck. That’s even worse.”
