“At the ice cream shop!” Rainie chirped.
“I have an ice cream machine right here in my kitchen.”
“Yay! Can I have sprinkles?”
“You can have as many sprinkles as you want.”
They were nearing the pin on the GPS map. Zach glanced at the rearview mirror, making eye contact with Ledger in a silent plan of action. They were getting close. Then they would attack.
Chapter Eighteen
Under the force of Zach’s steely shoulder, the door burst open with a thunderous crack. Inside, the room swirled in front of Opal’s vision.
A lamp had been left on in the front room like the investor expected company. Well, he was getting it.
And she was getting her daughter back.
The men surrounded her, shielding her with their big bodies.
Hunter gestured, and Carver followed in an unspoken tactical move. Zach shot a brief glance at Ledger, and then he peeled off with Colton right behind, leaving her with Ledger as her bodyguard.
“Ohhellno! I’m going too!”
Zach sliced a look at her over his shoulder. The stone-cold fury on his face coupled with the weapon in his hand made him look terrifying.
“You tried to leave Opal in the truck too, and look how that turned out.” Ledger stepped half in front of her and cut off her view of Zach so she missed whatever exchange happened between the men.
Ledger suddenly moved, guiding her forward.
Zach’s dark eyes burned into her. “Stay between us, Opal. Don’t make a move until I tell you it’s safe. Got it?”
“But—”
Sparks flashed in his eyes. “If you disobey me, I will turn you over my knee and spank you later.”
Her jaw dropped. Unable to speak, she could only nod.
Satisfied, he whipped around again and took off with Colton a step behind. When she heard her child’s high-pitched giggle, she felt the blood drain from her face.
Choking back a scream that would bring Rainie running to her, she forced herself to remain between the bodies of her protectors as they rushed into the house.
Another loud crash came as bowling pins fell to the floor of the lane. Immediately she understood how Zach slamming through the door went unnoticed.
Rainie squealed with glee again.
Oh god. She really was all right—enjoying herself, even—but for how long? As soon as Feldman saw that four huge, armed men had infiltrated the house, he could change his tune.
They hurried toward the sound. As they approached a door, Zach paused. “Fan out,” he murmured to Colton. “Ledger.”
He didn’t say more to his friend, but Opal understood his meaning; Ledger was not to let her out of his sight.
Zach surged into the room housing the bowling alley.
“Feldman! Stop right there!” His harsh tone sent skitters up and down her spine.
The men fanned out as Zach instructed, granting Opal a wide-open view of four small bowling lanes and her young daughter standing at the head of one, a big blue ball in her arms.
She dropped the ball, and it rolled away. Fear skittered over her face.
