She didn’t look at me until she put the car in reverse, and then she gave me the finger as she backed up. I grinned as I watched her drive away.
Maybe I should have given her a goodbye fuck for the road. But that would have only sent her mixed signals, and I could control my urges until I found her replacement. My dick didn’t rule me. For some reason Lulu’s face flashed behind my eyes. It didn’t take much to get hard around her. Hell, I’d been hard for her since I’d met her at the Desert Rebels’ clubhouse all those years ago.
Maybe if I’d fucked her back then she wouldn’t have stayed on my mind all this time, popping up when I least expected it. Monopolizing my fucking dreams. Glimpses of her, or the simple mention of her name, had only made it worse.
Someday I was going to fuck the shit out of her and be done with it.
Chapter 6
Lulu
I woke up tired and dragged ass most of the day. The bed that had been set up in the room for overnight help wasn’t anywhere near the perfection of the Purple mattress I had at home. Elizabeth had told me that I could go home, but I’d declined. There was no way I was going to leave her alone to handle the workload herself. Megan had shown up for her first day at the desk, but Stephanie didn’t start until the following Monday.
I took some Tylenol to stave off the headache that was trying to break through and had freshened up as best I could to face the day. Thank God it was almost over. We’d had six walk-ins and eight appointments, and in between I’d given Buttercup a bath and shave. She had to feel better with all that matted and dirty hair off of her. She certainly smelled better, and I put a pretty pink bow around her neck. Smiling to myself, I wondered what Brody would think of that.
“She’s smaller than I thought,” Elizabeth commented as she came by. “I’d say she’s a mix between a poodle and a spaniel, a Cavapoo.”
I laughed. “Did you just make that up?”
She shook her head as her hands trailed over the dog in question. “That’s what they call them.” Buttercup was surprisingly calm and accepting of Elizabeth’s touch. “She’s a real beauty, aren’t you, baby?”
“Are you looking for a dog?” I asked, and Elizabeth’s brows lifted in question. “I have a feeling that Mr. Savage isn’t going to keep her once she’s ready to be adopted out.”
Elizabeth finished her examination. “Why don’t you take her? With her temperament she’d make a great first pet for you.”
I stared down at Buttercup and as luck would have it, she was looking up at me with big, warm eyes and a look in them that tore at my heart strings. I’d never had the opportunity to have a pet before. My heart melted as I gave her little head a rub. My house was in the middle of nowhere, she’d have plenty of space to run around. And she would be nice company.
Elizabeth must have sensed my contemplation. “You could bring her here days so she doesn’t have to stay at home all day alone.”
I rolled my eyes and laughed. “Oh, my God, you’re making it so difficult for me! We don’t even know for sure if Brody will give her up.”
She smirked knowingly.
“Mr. Savage,” I was quick to amend.
Elizabeth shrugged. “Well, you’ll know soon enough and then you can decide. She’s good to go home today.”
“I’ll have Megan give him a call. Are you done for the day?”
She nodded. “Just got some paperwork to finish up.” She turned toward the door. “Oh, and don’t forget someone will be by first thing in the morning to fix the front door as well as the door behind the desk. Your friend Millie was nice enough to recommend someone.”
I’d heard from Millie earlier in the day. The club was on lockdown, and she’d been tasked with telling me to get my ass there. I’d politely refused. I didn’t feel as if I was in any danger, and while the club was still my family, my association with them was minimal these days. It was unlikely that the guys who had come for Millie knew about my history with the club, but even if they did I wasn’t important enough to give their enemies any leverage.
Club whores were left alone. It was the wives and sweethearts that were targeted.
I ran into Megan on my way to the front.
“Need me to do anything before I leave?” she asked.
I could tell that she’d already freshened up. She must have had a date or something. Her thick brown hair had been let down from the pony tail it had been in earlier, and unless I was mistaken, she’d darkened her eye makeup, making her hazel eyes look smokey and exotic. She was a pretty twenty-two-year-old woman who’d shown us on her first day working the desk that she was bright and proactive and had great people skills.
I thought about the call to Brody that needed to be made, but I could take care of that. “Have a hot date?” I smirked.
She blushed around a big smile. “I hope so. I won’t know if it’s hot until the end of the night.”
We both laughed. “Well, have a good time. See you in the morning.”
I watched her leave and then reached for the phone. I purposely used the clinic phone rather than my cell phone to keep things impersonal between me and Brody. He’d be just the type to read more into it if I were to call him on my cell, and I wasn’t in the mood. All I wanted to do was go home, get a hot shower, eat something for dinner, maybe do a little reading, and then go to bed.
